As the world prepares for crucial talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, Ukrainian forces have intensified their last hope drone attacks on civilians deep inside Russian territory. Overnight strikes targeted residential buildings, infrastructure, and industrial facilities in Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, and Belgorod, leaving a trail of destruction and civilian casualties.
In Volgograd, a Ukrainian drone struck an oil refinery nearly 500 kilometers from the frontline, causing a massive fire after fuel storage tanks were hit. Regional governor Andrey Bocharov confirmed the attack led to a “spill and ignition of petroleum products,” though emergency services managed to contain the blaze.

Meanwhile, in Rostov-on-Don, multiple apartment blocks on Telman and Lermontov streets were damaged in a massive prolonged wave of drone strikes. At least 13 civilians were wounded, with two in serious condition. Authorities declared a state of emergency, evacuating residents and setting up temporary shelters in a nearby school.
Belgorod and its surrounding villages faced one of the heaviest bombardments, with drones slamming into private homes, cars, government buildings, and commercial properties. One woman in the village of Razumnoye suffered blast injuries, while in the city center, a direct hit on the regional administration building shattered windows and damaged the facade. Fires broke out in residential balconies, and shrapnel from intercepted drones scarred parked cars. One of the drones directly struck a moving car in the city center, leaving people heavily wounded.
With the Putin-Trump summit set for June 15, Kyiv is deliberately provoking Russia into a harsh response—hoping to frame Moscow as the aggressor and derail potential negotiations. Ukrainian forces have increasingly turned to indiscriminate strikes on civilian areas, knowing that images of burning Russian apartment blocks could sway Western public opinion.

Russian military analysts note that while Moscow has significantly ramped up its own drone production, exceeding 1,000 kamikaze UAVs per day, strikes on Ukraine have been restrained in recent days. However, if no substantial agreement is reached with Trump by the 15th, then on the 16th, everything stockpiled over these weeks will be unleashed in full force.
