Militant Armed Drone Shot Down By Syrian Army In Northern Hama

Support SouthFront

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shot down an armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which was flying over its positions in the northern Hama countryside, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on June 11.

“Army units shot down a drone carrying bombs of the al-Nusra Front’s terrorists in the vicinity of the village of Tell Meleh north of the town of Mahreda in Hama’s northern countryside before it could reach the town and target the homes and property of the residents,” SANA’s reporter in Hama said.

The state-run agency released a photo of the UAV’s wreckage. The UAV’s design appears to be identical to the ones usually used by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), originally known as the al-Nusra Front.

These UAVs are usually armed with 8 to 4 small-diameter projectiles, filled with high-explosive materials and shrapnel. However, recently a new copy with a possible suicide warhead was shot down in northern Hama.

In the last few months, HTS used this type of armed UAVs extensively in northern Hama. However, most of the attacks failed, with the rest causing very little material damage to civilian infrastructure.
