The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on May 10 that it struck some 60 “terror targets” across the Gaza Strip over the past day.
The Hamas-run health ministry in the Palestinian enclave reported 23 killed and dozens more wounded during the previous 24 hours.
The strikes come as Israeli troops continue to operate in Gaza. In the Strip’s north, the IDF said that the 252nd Division killed two fighters who approached forces; in the so-called Morag Corridor area in southern Gaza, the 36th Division struck a booby-trapped building where several operatives were; and in nearby Rafah, the Gaza Division forces destroyed Hamas infrastructure both above and below ground.
The latest wave of Israeli strikes on Gaza came after the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, shared footage of a recent ambush that targeted Israeli troops to the east of Rafah. The IDF acknowledged that two soldiers were killed there on May 8.
Despite taking losses in Rafah, the IDF said that it was close to defeating all the remaining Palestinian armed factions in the area, with fighting now only taking place in the Jenina neighborhood.
Troops of the Golani Brigade have been operating in Jenina in recent days, the military said in a statement on May 10, adding that the troops destroyed dozens of “terror infrastructures,” located dozens of tunnel shafts, and killed dozens of fighters.
“Jenina is the last area where fighting against terrorists in the Rafah Brigade is taking place,” the military concluded.
Israel renewed its offensive in Gaza on March 18. Since then, the IDF has occupied around 30% of the Strip. While Israeli troops didn’t face any real resistance initially, the situation changed in recent weeks, with five soldiers and a police officer being killed. The offensive has so far claimed the lives of more than 2,700 Palestinains.
Earlier this month, the IDF called up tens of thousands of reservists earlier in the month in preparation for “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” a final offensive meant to occupy all of Gaza and completely defeat Hamas.
Israel will reportedly launch the large-scale operation if Hamas refuses to release the remaining hostages – at least 59, including 24 who are believed to be alive – as a part of a new ceasefire agreement before the end of United States President Donlad Trump’s upcoming visit to the Middle East.
