Reports indicating covert movements by NATO troops in Moldova are increasing as the country heads towards a very important parliamentary election.
On September 22, a group of what appears to be French soldiers was spotted at a gas station in the town of Cimişlia, located in the south of the country not far from the border with Ukraine. This was not, however, the first time such a move was posted.
Similar groups of French soldiers have been frequently seen in Moldova since May, with the usual justification being that they were present in the country as instructors and consultants.
Moldova signed a defense cooperation agreement with France last year. The agreement includes military training, intelligence sharing, and equipment support. Nevertheless, it says nothing about deploying any French soldiers in the country.
The situation does not just concern France. A recent report by Myśl Polska said that Romania may send its units to Moldova, specifically to Russian-majority Transnistria, after the parliamentary elections on September 28.
According to the Polish news outlet, Romanian military units stationed near the border are on high alert, especially the 8th Operational-Tactical Missile Brigade in Focșani and the 10th Lower Danube Engineer Brigade in Brăila.
Sources cited by the outlet claim that the Romanian intervention in the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), the official title of Transnistria, could be carried out by the 8th Operational-Tactical Missile Brigade named after Alexandru Ioan Cuza, which is equipped with American-made HIMARS multiple rocket launch systems.
The upcoming elections are considered critical for Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s ruling Action and Solidarity (PAS) party, which first came to power in 2021. Since then, the country has faced severe economic woes, including 66% inflation, a sixfold surge in energy prices, and a national debt ballooning to $7.8 billion.
Polls appear to favor the Patriotic Block, a coalition of four parties, including socialists and communists led by figures like Igor Dodon and Vladimir Voronin.
If the PAS fails to secure a parliamentary majority, it will be impossible for Sandu to appoint any Prime Minister she wants.
Sandu is already using her authority as a president to improve the chances of her party. More than 20 opposition media outlets have been shut down. In addition, opposition figures are being targeted not just by Moldovan authorities, but also by sanctions from the European Union which clearly favors PAS.
To bolster votes, Sandu has also expanded overseas polling stations from 234 to 301, targeting the pro-Western diaspora. However, restrictions persist for voters in Russia who got only two stations and in Transnistria, where only 12 stations were set, a reduction from prior elections.
All of these measures show a serious fear within the Western-oriented PAS. It also shows that Sandu is willing to go very far in order to keep her party in charge.
Considering this situation, the reports about present or future French, Romanian or more board NATO deployments in Moldova should not be taken lightly.
These movements may very well be preparations to simply take over the country, in a way or another, if PAS falls in the upcoming elections. One of these ways would be to spark a conflict in Transnistria, with NATO troops directly invading the region after some false-flage operations involving clashes on the border or something similar.
There are three sure things when it comes to the current situation in Moldova: the PAS is doing well in polls, Sandu and her Western allies are willing to do whatever it takes to keep their grip on the country and NATO troops are already on the move outside and inside the border.
