The naval version of the Pantsir-S air defense system, dubbed the Pantsir-M, successfully shot down targets mimicking anti-ship cruise missiles flying just 3-5 meters above water level during tests of a Karakurt-class corvette, sources in the Russian military-industrial complex told Izvestia on July 31.
The Pantsir-M, which first entered service in 2018, is planned to replace Soviet-era Kashtan-M close-in weapon system (CIWS).
The system is equipped with a phased array radar, electro-optical/infrared targeting and identification systems based on that of the Pantsir-S.
Using its main armament, the Pantsir-S’ 57E6 missiles and Hermes-K missiles, the CIWS can engage targets with a range of up to 20 kilometers. Its secondary armament are two six-barreled 30×165mm GSh-6-30K/AO-18KD rotary cannons with a range of five kilometers.
The Pantsir-M “entered reliable operation” following the successful compilation of the latest tests, according to Izvestia’s sources, which noted that the system can now “confidently” shoot down all sorts of aerial targets, from missiles to small drones.
Last year, the CEO of High Precision Weapons company Oleg Ryazantsev told Zvezda Plus television that the Pantsir-M had successfully engaged a Franco-British Storm Shadow land-attack cruise missile fired by Ukraine. The interception likely took place over the Black Sea.
The Pantsir-M is already installed on many of the 13 Karakurt-class corvettes currently in service with the Russian military. Admiral Nakhimov, a Kirov-class nuclear-powered battlecruiser that is undergoing a complete upgrade, was also reportedly equipped with the system for close-in protection.
