Russia’s ZALA Aero Group released on August 5 video footage demonstrating how drone units cooperate with the operators of 1L220-U Zoopark-2 counter-batter radars to locate Ukrainian artillery then take them out with Lancet loitering munitions.
Zoopark-2 was developed to detect all types of projectiles. It can detect artillery shells from 30 kilometers, rockets from up to 50 kilometers and even tactical ballistic missiles from 80 kilometers. The F-band radar has an internal navigation and orientation system that enables autonomous operation.
“The [Zoopark-2] station is used for counter-battery combat, it allows identifying enemy fire weapons. Based on the results of the work, we receive the coordinates of the projectile firing point, and we transmit them to the control center. After that, additional reconnaissance is carried out with the help of an UAV (unnamed aerial vehicle), and the confirmed target is attacked with fire,” the commander of the radar system with the call sign “Serb” explains in the footage released by ZALA.
The coordinates provided by the counter-battery radar are refined by a Z-16 reconnaissance drone. The Z-16, produced by ZALA, is reported to have an operational range of over 50 kilometers and an endurance of up to 150 minutes.
Once the location of the artillery, in the cease of the footage released by ZALA it is an American-made M198 towed 155 mm howitzer, is confirmed, it is then targeted with a Lancet loitering munition.
ZALA produces two versions of the loitering munition, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 30 minutes and a one-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of 40 minutes and is armed with a warhead weighing three kilograms.
The loitering munition flies towards the designated area with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. After arriving in the area, the operator utilizes an onboard electro-optical system via a two-way data-link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser-ranging system then controls the detonation of the warhead.
“The use of the Zoopark radar in conjunction with the Lancet UAV expands the capabilities of counter-battery combat,” ZALA said, commenting on the footage.
According to Lostarmour.info, a website that documents military losses, Lancet strikes have destroyed or damaged more than 1,200 artillery pieces of Kiev forces, including multiple rocket launchers, towed and self-propelled howitzers, since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine more than three years ago.
