The night of May 4-5 saw another wave of strikes between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides launching waves of drone and missile strikes. While the Russian military is targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure, Kyiv continues wasting forces in media attacks.
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Russian air defenses intercepted 26 Ukrainian drones, including 17 over Bryansk region, five over Kaluga region, and four near Moscow, where an attack by four UAVs was thwarted in Podolsk. Ukrainian attacks resulted in no significant damage, but they had political rather than military goals. Ukrainian UAVs targeted Moscow, after Zelensky refused a three-day ceasefire on the upcoming Victory Day. Attempts to launch the drone strikes were aimed at threatening air security of the Russian capital, which will soon host large festive celebrations with high-ranked foreign leaders; but another Kyiv’s provocation failed and highlighted the high effectiveness of Russian air defense.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces faced a massive assault, with Russian military reportedly firing two Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and launching 116 attack drones from Kursk, Orel, Millerovo, and Zaporozhie region. According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian air defenses allegedly shot down 42 Geran-type drones, while 21 decoy drones reportedly disappeared inflicting no damage. Despite efforts of Ukrainian air defense, large explosions thundered across the country, including in Kirovograd, Kramatorsk, Kharkiv, Konotop, Mykolaiv and Poltava regions.
One of the key targets of Russian night strikes was the town of Konotop in the border Sumy region, where the mayor reported the destruction of a critical industrial facility by over a dozen Geran-2 drones and two ballistic missiles. According to unofficial reports, Russian strieks pounded the local airfield located on the western outskirts of the town, which was used for drone launches, including on the Russian territory.
The Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation also showed night drone strikes destroying an ammunition depot and repair workshop belonging to the Ukrainian 81st Air Mobile Brigade, as well as a temporary base of the 58th Motorized Infantry Brigade in Kramatorsk.
Additional attacks targeted military-industrial facilities in Kharkiv, Poltava, and Kirovohrad, with fires reported still raging by morning. Air raid alerts remained active across multiple Ukrainian regions as the threat of further strikes persisted.
The escalation comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a three-day ceasefire from May 8-10 to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. However, Kyiv rejected the offer, with Ukrainian officials instead issuing warnings to foreign leaders planning to attend commemorative events in Moscow.
The overnight strikes underscore the continued intensity of the conflict, with both sides seeking to degrade each other’s military capabilities, with different success, ahead of symbolic dates. As drone and missile warfare intensifies, the coming days may see further attacks, particularly as Russia prepares for its Victory Day celebrations while Ukraine attempts to disrupt them.
