North Korea conducted another test of strategic cruise missiles and anti-warship missiles on April 12 as part of operational efficiency trials of its latest destroyer Choe Hyon, KCNA reported on April 14.

The state-run news agency said that leader Kim Jong Un observed the test alongside senior defense officials and naval commanders.

The 5,000-ton destroyer was launched last year. The warship was graded as the “Choe Hyon-class” named after anti-Japanese revolutionary fighter Choe Hyon. During the launching ceremony at the western port of Nampo, Kim called the ship’s construction “a breakthrough” in modernizing North Korea’s naval forces.

Two strategic cruise missiles and three anti-warship missiles were fired to check the warship’s integrated weapons command system, train crews in missile-launch procedures and verify the accuracy and anti-jamming performance of upgraded navigation systems, according to the report.

The strategic cruise missiles flew for about 7,869 to 7,920 seconds and the anti-warship missiles for about 1,960 to 1,973 seconds over waters off the country’s western coast, KCNA said, noting that the missiles struck their targets with ultra-precision accuracy.

Photos released by KCNA indicate that the strategic cruise missiles tested were of the Hwasal-2 type, which is believed to have a range of 1,500-2,000 kilometers. The supersonic cruise missile can reportedly be armed with the Hwasan-31 tactical nuclear warhead, which weights 150-200 kg and has a blast yield of 4-10 kt.

As for the anti-warship missiles they were clearly from the Padasuri-6 type, which is reported to have a range of 200-400 kilometers.

KCNA reported that Kim was briefed the same day on weapons system plans for two additional destroyers under construction, indicating preparations for the third and fourth vessels of the Choe Hyon-class.

Kim said that strengthening what he called the country’s nuclear war deterrent remained a top priority, and called ‌for improving strategic and tactical strike capabilities and rapid-response readiness, according to the report.

North Korea made serious efforts to modernize its navy in recent years. In addition to Choe Hyon-class destroyers, the country is finalizing the construction of its first nuclear attack submarine.
