North Korean Heavy Artillery Enters Battle: First Footage of M1991 MLRS Emerges - Report

Illustrative Image

A reportedly leaked video has confirmed the deployment of North Korean 240mm M1991 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) with Russian forces in the zone of the Special Military Operation. The footage, likely recorded by a careless soldier and shared via messaging apps, shows the distinctive wheeled launcher being fitted with anti-drone cages, marking the first visual evidence of Pyongyang’s heavy artillery systems in Russian hands.

The M1991, developed in the 1980s as a counterpart to the Soviet BM-27 Uragan (Hurricane), fires massive 5.2-meter rockets weighing about 400 kg with 90 kg warheads. Its 22-round salvos can saturate targets 40-60 km away in under a minute, with reports suggesting newer variants may reach 80 km. Open-source analysts note the system’s compatibility with various warhead types, including thermobaric and cluster munitions.

The appearance follows months of intelligence reports about North Korean arms shipments to Russia, including:

  • 100+ artillery systems (M1991 MLRS and 170mm Koksan guns)

  • 5 million shells

  • Ballistic missiles like KN-23

Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov had warned of 120 such systems being transferred.

The systems are likely being deployed in secondary sectors to conserve more advanced munitions, supposing Russia’s use of North Korean shells to offset production bottlenecks.

As Western sanctions strain Russia’s defense industry, Kim Jong Un’s stockpiles offer a stopgap solution, even if the 1980s-era tech comes with reliability risks. With hundreds of M1991s reportedly available, these systems may soon become a frequent sight across the frontlines, further globalizing the Ukraine conflict’s arsenal.

common sense for russians to acquire such weapons systems. russia can pay for whatever they need, while the ukrainians grovel like spoiled children demanding free hardware from all of europe, north america etc.

i wouldn’t be surprised that on top of north korea even china were to contribute to the russian war effort by giving putin some of that nasty magnesium hydride dragon fire bombs they have recently managed to produce on industrial scales.

china is loyal to noone but themselves, china is literally playing both sides, and when russia & china along with its coalition partners attack and destroy the u.s. china will turn on russia and destroy them! china is literally the only ones winning right now.

its ok for the russians to get stuff from someone else, but it is also disturbing that russia is lacking in domestically produced rockets and artillery shells. considering how long the front is the russian strikes against ukaine are rather measly and small (just three rockets launched last night).

current battle experience is valuable to asses the use and usefulness of weapon systems.
