North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has inspected several munitions factories, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on May 7.
According to the state-run news agency, the leader inspected munition production and the state of the machine-building industry. He said that a rapid increase of shell production helped the North Korean military’s combat power.
While inspecting the munition enterprises under the Second Economy Commission, Kim also expressed “great satisfaction,” saying the facilities’ modernization had reached a high level and that the shell production capacity had grown rapidly.
The respective munitions enterprises’ shell output has increased four times the average annual level and nearly twice the peak-year level, according to KCNA.
Kim expressed hope that “they [factories] would produce more shells to contribute to the expansion of the combat power of our armed forces.”
In addition, the leader inspected a machine factory. While there, he discussed its modernization goal and the long-term development of the country’s machine-building industry, KCNA said.
KIM also urged the factory to focus on developing and producing “more intelligent, high-speed, precision and multifunctional machine-building equipment” to enhance the production and technical power of the munitions industry, as well as other sectors of the national economy.
Photos released by KCNA showed Kim next to dozens of what appears to be unfinished 240 mm rockets affiliated with the M1991 multiple launcher. These rockets have a range of up to 60 kilometers. A precision-guided version was produced by North Korea.
Dozens of launch canisters for larger caliber rockets, like for the KN-25 multiple launcher, can also be seen in the photos. KN-25 600 mm precision-guided rockets are believed to have a range of 380 kilometers and an accuracy close to 80 meters.
