Overview Of Military Situation in Ukraine, July 6, 2025

Russian strikes damaged industrial sector facilities in Vyshgorod

Situation in the sky

The past night witnessed intense aerial activity characterized by massive drone strikes from both sides. According to the Russian MoD, air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 120 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones launched toward Russian territories. The UAVs were downed predominantly over Bryansk (30), Kursk (29), Oryol (18), Belgorod (17), and Tula (13) regions, with others neutralized above Kaluga, Leningrad, Smolensk, Novgorod, Tver regions, and the Sea of Azov.

Simultaneously, Russian naval forces repelled a nighttime attack involving unmanned surface vessels near Novorossiysk, highlighting persistent tensions in the Black Sea maritime zone.

In response, the Russian Armed Forces (RAF) utilized “Geran” drones to strike strategic targets deep inside Ukrainian-controlled areas. One notable target was reportedly the “Marshal” oil depot in Chuhuiv, Kharkiv region, resulting in a significant fire visible from tens of kilometers away, as confirmed by satellite imagery from NASA.

Additionally, Russian “Geran” drones struck multiple Territorial Recruitment Centers (TCCs) in Kremenchuk, an action viewed by observers as targeting key mobilization infrastructure amid widespread discontent among Ukrainian citizens regarding forced conscription measures.

Situation on the fronts

Currently, the RAF continue to pursue its strategic objective of neutralizing Ukraine’s military capabilities, reflecting adjustments to the initial demilitarization goals outlined at the beginning of the special military operation. According to various analysts, the primary aim is not necessarily the capture of major urban centers, but rather the systematic degradation of Ukraine’s armed forces as Russian units advance.

In the Sumy direction, despite persistent challenges in establishing complete Russian control over the settlement of Yunakovka, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have been compelled to deploy elite units to maintain their defensive positions, which are regularly targeted by Russian aviation assets. Additionally, Russian troops have opened a new axis of operations along the Belgorod sector of the border, where they successfully took control of a frontier village.

In the Kupyansk direction, the Russian MoD reported the liberation of Sobolevka, located west of Kupyansk. Ukrainian forces have denied losing control of the settlement, and independent confirmation remains pending. Operationally, such a development would imply that Kupyansk is effectively semi-encircled.

On the northern sector of the Kupyansk front, Ukrainian formations are also facing significant difficulties. Russian units, engaged in heavy fighting, are gradually advancing towards Konstantinovka from three directions. Additionally, Russian forces are progressively moving from the north toward Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk), with initial control reportedly established over certain areas within the Dnipropetrovsk region.

In the South Donetsk direction, units of the Eastern group of forces continue to advance, combining effective firepower with tactical maneuvers.

Russian troops have already liberated the settlement of Poddubnoye. After the initial houses were secured, Ukrainian resistance was broken, with some AFU units abandoning their positions and retreating. During the battle for the village, up to a company’s worth of personnel from Ukraine’s 37th and 141st brigades was eliminated. In total, the RAF have secured more than 430 buildings.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Russian units have come close to fully capturing the settlement of Kamenskoye, opening the possibility for a subsequent advance towards Stepnogorsk.

On the political front

The President of the United States, who entered the White House pledging to end several ongoing military conflicts, currently lacks a clear strategy for resolving the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, another armed conflict involving extensive use of U.S. strategic aviation has already depleted NATO’s Middle Eastern air-defense missile stocks by approximately 20%, significantly influencing the overall policy of weapons supplies to Kiev.

Ukraine’s rapid expenditure of ammunition and military equipment has not only depleted European arsenals but has also compelled the United States to tap into its own strategic reserves. However, this does not imply that Ukrainian forces will soon find themselves entirely without the means to repel attacks from Russian units equipped with advanced tanks, such as the Armata. Under current conditions, the technological paradigm of warfare has undergone significant transformation, turning ground combat operations into primarily drone-based engagements, conducted amid intensive use of Soviet-designed aerial bombs equipped with munition guidance kit  (UMPC).

Russian offensive operations generally commence after extensive aerial and artillery strikes. However, in certain sectors of the frontline, some commanders persist in using outdated tactical approaches, leading to unnecessary personnel losses during direct assaults.

Western nations have recognized the strategic advantages offered by unmanned aerial vehicles in contemporary combat scenarios. While Russian units currently face certain difficulties due to Chinese manufacturers transitioning to newer models within the Mavic drone series, NATO countries are actively deploying specialized military UAVs that operate over secure communication channels and are designed specifically for the precise delivery of munitions—unlike the improvised modifications often created by enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, Russia has managed to significantly scale up the production of FPV drones, and the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles of the Geran type has become as emblematic of long-range strikes as the use of high-precision Kinzhal missile systems.
