The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) announced on May 12 it would dissolve itself and end a decades-long conflict with Turkey.
“The PKK has completed its historic mission,” the group said, according to the Firat news agency, which published what it said was the closing declaration of a congress that the group held last week in Iraq’s northern autonomous region of Kurdistan where it is based.
“The PKK 12th Congress decided to dissolve the PKK’S organizational structure, with the practical process to be managed and carried out by Leader Apo, and to end the armed struggle method,” the statement said, referring to the group’s imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan, by his nickname.
“The PKK struggle has broken the policy of denial and annihilation of our people and brought the Kurdish issue to a point of solving it through democratic politics,” the statement continued.
The statement added that the “practical process” of dissolution would be managed by Ocalan, and that they have “ended the work carried out under the name of the PKK.”
The PKK is designated as a “terrorist” organisation by Turkiye and its Western allies. The conflict between Turkey and the group has been ongoing for over 46 years. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
Ocalan made a call for the party to end the conflict with Turkey last February. Ocalan handed over the statement to a delegation of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party who was visiting him in the island prison where he has been held since 1999. Following the Kurdish leader’s call, the PKK declared a ceasefire.
Commenting on the announcement, Omer Celik, spokesperson Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party that is headed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that the PKK’s decision to dissolve was an “an important step toward a terror-free Turkey”.
While the PKK’s announcement represents a serious breakthrough, similar peace efforts failed in the past. The group reached a ceasefire with Turkey in 2013 with the aim of completely ending the conflict, only for it to collapse two years later.
