The pro-Iran Handala hacking group announced on December 28 that it had hacked the phone of Tzachi Braverman, chief of staff of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The hackers said that they will release new information that ties Braverman to the Qatargate. The scandal revolves around two advisers Netanyahu who allegedly worked on behalf of Qatar for the Perception public relations firm headed by Yisrael Einhorn, the primer’s former campaign manager. An investigation into the affair began in Israel earlier this year in Israel.
Later, the group leaked photos and videos, as well as files from Braverman’s contact list purportedly containing phone numbers of top officials and others in Netanyahu’s inner circle, including the premier’s wife Sara Netanyahu.
There are also a number of videos and official documents, including one on emergency procedures put in place during the 12-day June war with Iran.
Notably, the leak came just a week after Eli Feldstein, one of the advisors involved in Qatargate, revealed during an interview that Braverman was involved in a separate but related alleged scandal involving the leak of classified information to German tabloid Bild as part of an alleged scheme to sway public opinion and ease pressure on Israel to reach a deal with Hamas.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office told The Times of Israel that “no breach has been found on Braverman’s phone and that the issue is being investigated.”
Handala is the very same group that earlier this month announced the hacking of former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s phone.
The cyber war between Israel and Iran escalated in recent years, and even became a key part of intelligence and military operations carried out by both sides.
A report by The New York Times from August revealed that Israel was able to track and target senior Iranian political officials, military commanders and nuclear scientists during the 12-day war by hacking the phones of their bodyguards and drivers. The latest series of leaks by Handala and other pro-Iran hacking groups can be considered a response.
