Over the past two days, Russian forces claimed two more villages in Zaporizhzhya, Odessa lost its lights twice, Ukrainian drones burned a gas condensate plant on the Baltic – and Kiev’s own services traded fire in a residential courtyard.
On the Zaporizhizya axis, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on September 1 that the “Vostok” grouping had taken Chervonaya Krinitsa – about 100 structures and more than 15 square kilometers of fortified ground – while the “Dnepr” grouping took Novopavlovka. Kiev has acknowledged neither loss, which is its habit. Around Orekhov the fighting has reached the town itself.
After his Kyrgyzstan visit, Putin said the “Vostok” and “Dnepr” groupings were advancing on a broad front toward the city of Zaporozhye, that nine settlements had been taken in the region during August, and that street fighting had reached central Orekhov. He also claimed 13 Ukrainian battalions, some 5,000 troops, were encircled there. Kiev has not commented on the figure.
In the air war against Ukraine, the night of September 1 brought ballistic and cruise missiles plus 218 drones against the Kiev and Odessa regions. Ukraine’s Air Force reported 199 targets downed and impacts at 28 locations.
In Odessa, the main and auxiliary equipment of the city’s thermal power plant was damaged, and the lights began going out that same day.
On the night of September 2, Odessa was struck again: more than ten explosions, energy and port targets, a damaged 24-story apartment block, and every tram and trolleybus in the city standing still. Monitors listed “Banderol” S-8000 missiles, Iskander-M and Geran drones. The Russian MoD did not comment.
In the air war against Russia, Kiev’s night was its strongest of the season. Air defenses reported 516 fixed-wing drones destroyed over 19 Russian regions. Ukraine’s military intelligence said its drones hit the NOVATEK complex at the Baltic port of Ust-Luga – a plant that fractionated nearly 8 million tons of gas condensate last year into naphtha, kerosene and diesel – and that key processing units were struck.
Yet not every battle of these two days was fought at the front.
On September 1, the Russian Volunteer Corps said its deputy commander Stepan Kaplunov had been seized in his own courtyard days earlier.
On September 2, gunfire broke out on Yuriy Shumsky Street in Kiev; local accounts say GUR men came for the SBU officers holding him. Neither service mentioned it. The SBU announced instead that it and the GUR had “jointly” foiled an FSB plot, while investigators process a kidnapping complaint from his lawyers.
For all the numbers of these two days, one thing stands out. On the front, everyone knows who is shooting at whom. In a Kiev courtyard, nobody will say.
