On the night of December 13-14, Russian and Ukrainian forces conducted mutual strikes. The Russian attack, which included a ballistic missile and over 130 strike drones, was primarily aimed at Ukraine’s Odesa region. In turn, Ukrainian forces launched over 235 drones at targets in several Russian regions, including power stations, oil depots, and oil refineries.
Affected Objects in Ukraine
The strike affected five regions, with the most intense attacks in Odesa Region.
Odesa Region: Russian forces carried out a second consecutive massive strike on the region’s energy sector. Facilities of energy, transport and industrial infrastructure were damaged. Numerous hits were reported in the village of Sarata, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district.
The Ukrainian Navy accused the Russian Armed Forces of attacking the Turkish-flagged vessel ‘VIVA,’ which was reportedly carrying sunflower oil from Ukraine to Egypt. Russian and Turkish authorities have not yet confirmed the incident.
Sumy Region: In the city of Shostka, a strike hit the “Svema” sports complex. According to available data, the facility was used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a barracks and ammunition depot. It is reported that over 80 servicemen could have been present there at the time of the attack.
Zaporizhzhia Region: In the city of Zaporizhzhia, a supermarket of the ATB chain was damaged.
Affected Objects in Russia
The Ukrainian attack affected several regions, with main targets being energy and oil refining facilities.
Volgograd Region: A strike on an oil depot in Uryupinsk has been confirmed. Governor Andrey Bocharov reported explosions and a fire at the facility.
Smolensk Region: An attempt was made to attack the Smolensk Thermal Power Plant. Officials report no casualties or destruction, while stating the interception of 8 unmanned aerial vehicles.
Yaroslavl Region: According to local sources, the target of the attack was again the Slavneft-YANOS PJSC oil refinery in Yaroslavl.
Krasnodar Krai: Residents reported explosions in the area of the Afipsky Oil Refinery, as well as damage to residential buildings. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported the interception of 22 drones over the region.
Tula Region: Explosions were heard in the area of the Shchyokinoazot chemical plant in the city of Shchyokino. The consequences of the strike are unknown.
Republic of Crimea: Over the peninsula, according to the Russian defense ministry, 73 unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted. A 330 kV substation in Dzhankoi and an oil depot in Feodosia came under attack. Explosions were also reported in the areas of the Kirovske airfield, Sevastopol, Hvardiiske, Saky, Simferopol, and Krasnohvardiiske.
Other regions: Air defense system operations were also recorded over Leningrad and Novgorod Regions, where, according to reports, the target was a chemical plant.
Thus, the Russian strikes, concentrated on southern Ukraine, demonstrate an attempt to put pressure on the region’s vital facilities, such as ports and the energy grid. Ukraine, in turn, concentrated its strikes on disabling Russia’s fuel and energy infrastructure, attempting to demonstrate a retaliatory force following yesterday’s massive Russian strikes, when over 400 drones were launched over Ukrainian territory.
