The Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad handed over the Tamal stealth guided missile frigate of project 11356 to the Indian Navy, Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) announced.
“The gala handover ceremony was held on July 1 in Kaliningrad. The frigate is called the Tamal, which means Sword in translation. The acceptance act was signed by Rosoboronexport representative and the commander of the warship,” the company said.
“She is a modern and multirole warship with high combat capabilities to counter surface, ground, underwater and air targets,” USC CEO Andrey Puchkov said adding the corporation will assist India in the construction of two other frigates on its territory.
“Our experience and competences in the design and construction of warships are in demand in many leading world countries. We plan to develop international cooperation,” he added.
The Tamal, which has a displacement of over 4,000 tons when fully-loaded, is equipped with 20 Indian-made systems, including weapons, communication complex, detection and guidance radar, and sonar, Rosoboronexport CEO Alexander Mikheyev said.
“The company actively develops partnership with Indian government and private enterprises in the joint design and production of military products in the partner’s territory. We are discussing 50 projects for all arms of forces,” he added.
The Tamal was the eight Project 11356 frigates to be handed over to India, and the second of the deeply upgraded Batch 3. It has an operational range of up to 4,850 nautical miles and a maximum speed of 30 knots.
The frigate is equipped with a Vertical Launch System (VLS) capable of hosting eight Russian-Indian BrahMos supersonic anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles. It is also armed with 24 Shtil-1 medium-range anti-aircraft missiles, installed in a separate VLS nest. Eight Igla-1E short-range air defense systems are also installed around the vessel. Furthermore, the Tamal features a A-190E 100 mm naval gun and two AK-630 30 mm close-in weapon systems.
To counter submarine and other underwater threats, the frigate is equipped with a double 533 mm torpedo tubes and one RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launcher.
In addition to a wide array of sensors and electronic warfare systems, the Tamal has one PK-10 ship-borne decoy launching system and four KT-216 decoy launchers.
The remaining two Project 11356 Batch 4 frigates are under construction at the Goa Shipyard in India. The vessels will feature further improvements.
Russia continues to be one of the main military partners of India, even after years of Western efforts to sway New Delhi away from Moscow.
