The Severnaya Verf Shipyard in Russia St. Petersburg launched on August 14 the improved Project 22350 frigate “Admiral Amelko”.
Project 22350 frigates have a displacement of about 5,000 tons, and can accelerate to 29 knots. The frigates are capable of engaging enemy aircraft carrier groups and other surface targets, providing air defense for naval formations, supporting amphibious operations, striking land and sea targets, and conducting anti-submarine warfare.
Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev said that Admiral Amelko is capable of performing all tasks typical of a multi-purpose warship, in both near and far sea zones.
Meanwhile, Presidential Aide and Chairman of the Russian Naval Board Nikolai Patrushev noted that the frigate’s launch is a clear demonstration of Russia’s growing naval power and the domestic shipbuilding industry’s capability to produce modern, high-tech maritime equipment.
Russia currently has three Project 22350 frigates, Admiral Gorshkov, Admiral Kasatonov, and Admiral Golovko, in service with the Northern Fleet, and Admiral Amelko, the fifth vessel in the series, will later join the Pacific Fleet.
Admiral Amelko is the first ship in the class to be equipped with a UKSK vertical launch system (VLS) with 24 cells. The system can deploy a range of long-range precision strike weapons, including the Kalibr cruise missile, the Oniks supersonic missile, and the Tsirkon hypersonic missile. The four previous frigates in the class each carried only 16 launch cells.
In addition, Project 22350 frigates are equipped with the naval version of the S-350 medium-range air defense system, known as Redut. The system has its own VLS with 32 launch cells. Each cell could house a single 9M96 long-range anti-aircraft missile, or quad-packed 9M100 missiles for short-range defense.
Frigates of this class are also equipped with two Palash close-in weapon systems, 130 mm Amethyst/Arsenal A-192M naval gun, and two quad 30 mm torpedo tubes for Paket-NK anti-torpedo and anti-submarine torpedoes.
The Severnaya Verf Shipyard, part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, is continuing work on four additional Project 22350 frigates: Admiral Isakov, Admiral Chichagov, Admiral Yumashev, and Admiral Spiridonov. The Russian Navy has also confirmed plans to lay down two more ships of the class in 2026.
