Russia Systematically Dismantles Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure Amid Mutual Strikes

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that on the night of December 25, Russian forces launched 131 attack unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), of which 106 were intercepted or suppressed by air defense systems. At the same time, the Russian side stated that it had destroyed 141 Ukrainian UAVs over regions including Bryansk, Tula, Kaluga regions and the Moscow region.

Reports indicate that the dynamics of strikes on Ukrainian territory continue to demonstrate Russia’s strategic goal: the systematic dismantling of Ukraine’s energy system, particularly in northern regions. In recent days, key substations in Chernihiv and Sumy regions have been targeted. This tactic pursues a pragmatic objective — isolating the combat zone by disrupting energy supply. The northern corridor is critically important for the Ukrainian army as a route for deploying reserves. Strikes on energy facilities aim to narrow this window of opportunity, complicate logistics, and deprive regions of resilience.

Furthermore, Ukrainian military sources note an adaptation in Russian tactics for employing “Geran” (Geranium) drones. Recently, these UAVs have begun flying at extremely low altitudes, making them difficult to intercept not only by ground-based air defense systems but also by helicopters. According to some experts, this is driven by economic expediency: instead of equipping disposable UAVs with expensive, high-zoom cameras, cheaper equipment is used, with the necessary detail for reconnaissance achieved by lowering the flight altitude. This tactic has also become feasible due to the redeployment of many Ukrainian mobile anti-aircraft gun units to the front lines, which has weakened air defense in rear areas.

Affected Facilities in Ukraine

On December 25:

The main blow fell on the south and east. In Odesa region, drones attacked infrastructure in Illichivsk, Zatoka, and Mayaky, where a strategic bridge was attacked again. In the port of Chornomorsk, an administrative building, a checkpoint, and vehicles within the terminal area were hit. These strikes continue to paralyze the region’s “maritime hub.”

In Kharkiv, strikes by “Geran” drones and “Tornado-S” MLRS rockets on heating facilities led to disruptions in heating and hot water supply in several districts, which is especially critical amid temperatures dropping to -14°C.

Explosions were recorded in Dnipropetrovsk region (Vasylkivka, Chaplyne). In Sumy region, Russian forces carried out a ballistic strike on an enterprise in Trostianets. As a result of attacks on energy facilities, power outages were recorded in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa regions.

On December 24:

Key targets were Sumy and Chernihiv regions, where attacks hit warehouses, deployment points, military logistics nodes, and air defense systems. In Kremenchuk (Poltava region), “Geran” drones struck an automobile plant producing trucks and “Spartan” armored vehicles for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Attacks on shipping continued: a kamikaze drone attacked a Liberian-flagged dry cargo ship carrying Ukrainian soybeans in the port of Odesa. Earlier, on December 23, the Turkish vessel “MY VIVO” carrying a cargo of sunflower oil was attacked in international waters of the Black Sea. According to the Ukrainian Farmers’ Association, these strikes have led to a significant reduction in food exports, breaches of contracts, and the idling of key ports.

Strikes on Russian Territory

On December 25:

In Krasnodar Krai, a Ukrainian UAV attack on the port of Temryuk caused a major fire in two petroleum product storage tanks covering an area of about 4,000 square meters. Also, in the Shcherbinovsky district of the krai, buildings and equipment of an agricultural enterprise were damaged.

In Rostov region, the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery was allegedly attacked by Storm Shadow cruise missiles. In Adygea, a strike was carried out on the “Maykop” military airfield.

Another target was the Orenburg gas processing plant, located 1,270 km from the border.

On December 24:

In Tula region, an attack caused a fire at the Yefremov Synthetic Rubber Plant. In Krasnodar Krai, a kamikaze drone attacked an Il-38N anti-submarine aircraft at the airfield in Yeysk.

According to monitoring resources, November 2025 set a record for the number of confirmed strikes on targets within Russia — 60 compared to 41 in October. However, statistics show a shift in priorities: while the peak of strikes on Russian oil refineries was in September, in November the leading targets were energy facilities. Analysts note that Ukraine, having gained the capability to conduct regular long-range strikes in 2025, has encountered the same problem Russia faced at the beginning of its campaign against Ukraine’s energy system: inflicting critical damage to an entire nationwide industry is extremely difficult.

On the evening of November 25, monitoring channels in Ukraine reported the deployment of a Russian missile carrier capable of carrying up to six “Kalibr” cruise missiles into the Black Sea, indicating the potential for continued precision strikes.

as cruel as it may sound, the best thing for ukrainie would be if they completely lose electricity & heat nationwide.& the war can no longer continue. the other option is the eu-nato & their puppets zelenskyy & the kiev junta continue to fight to the last ukrainian just so that the eu/nato elites don’t look like looooosers. it’s way better to be cold than deadcold. just ask those 2.2 million war dead ukrainians.

the electrical sub-stations are still intact which connect ukraine to neighbor countries. they should be the top priority targets especially the 750kv/300kv substation next to khodoriv. russia wants to win this war or just sustain it?

when one causes war one has to expect the unexpected. the kiev junta strike a nato yay, and then lose half their power supply, good luck trying to round up fodder for nato in the dark.
