Russia’s weapons export portfolio for this year includes an order for Kalibr cruise missiles, Alexander Mikheev, General Director of the country’s sole weapons exporter Rosoboronexport, revealed.
Channel One Russia quoted the Rosoboronexport head as saying that the company’s order portfolio for 2026 has already exceeded $60 billion.
Mikheev didn’t reveal the name of the country which will receive the Kalibr cruise missiles. The customer is likely to be one of the countries that already operate the export version of the system, dubbed Club, which are Algeria, India, Iran, China and Vietnam.
Several types of anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles are included within the Kalibr, or Club, family of missiles. Some missiles have a second propulsion stage that initiates a supersonic sprint in the terminal approach to the target, reducing the time that air defense systems have to react
There are two major launch platforms for the export version: the Club-S, designed for use from submarines, and the Club-N designed for surface ships. There are also the land-launched Club-T, the containerized Club-K, and even the air-launched Club-A.
The Club-S fires the 3M-54E and the 3M-54E1 anti-ship missiles, with a range of 300 kilometers and a warhead weighing 200 kg. The Club-N launches the very similar 3M-54TE and 3M-54TE1. The Club-S can also launch the 3M-14E land-attack missile, which has a similar range, with a heavier 450 kg warhead. The Club-N fires its own version of the missile, the 3M-14TE.
All missiles employ a GLONASS-aided Inertial guidance plus terminal active radar homing, which gives them pinpoint accuracy.
In addition, the missiles can fly as low as 50 meters above ground level, and down to just 20 meters above water levels. This makes them an even harder target for air defense systems.
Soon after Mikheev’s remarks went out, it was assumed by some observers that the missiles will be exported to Iran for its three Kilo-class diesel-electric attack submarines which are already armed with the Club-S. However, this is unlikely considering that Iran already produces a wide array of cruise missiles.
It is more likely that the cruise missiles will go to Algeria, which is known for keeping its military purchases under tight wraps. All other countries that already operate the system usually announce their purchases.
The country already operates a fleet of six Kilo-class diesel-electric attack submarines which are all believed to be armed with the Club-S.
It’s worth noting that President Vladimir Putin revealed last month that Russia exported $15 billion in weapons to 30 countries during the past year.
The fact that Kalibr cruise missiles will be exported amid the special military operation in Ukraine shows that the Russian military-industrial complex is capable of fulfilling more than just domestic demands, even when it comes to higher-end weapons.
