Russia’s state tech corporation Rostec unveiled the all-new RPG-29M lightweight rocket-propelled grenade launcher at the World Defense Show 2026 international defense exhibition in Riyadh, which opened its doors on February 8.
The RPG-29M weighs just a third of the original Soviet-era RPG-29. It features a two-piece modular design. One part is a reusable firing unit with the sight, which is the launcher, and the other is a disposable container holding the round.
“The RPG-29M hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher is a major upgrade from the RPG-29. The weapon has become lighter, more versatile, and more effective, and also features improved ergonomics,” Rostec press service said in a statement released on February 10.
The cooperation added that the RPG-29M can be equipped with modern optical and thermal imaging sights, doubling its precision range of fire.
It also noted that the grenade launcher’s improved loading system significantly expands the variety of ammunition it can fire.
Three new rounds were developed especially for the launcher: the PG-29VM tandem high-explosive anti-tank round, the TBG-29VM thermobaric round for use against fortifications, and the MG-29V multi-purpose round.
Rostec also said that the grenade launcher’s ammunition will include in the future incendiary, cluster, and fragmentation rounds.
“The RPG-29M’s long effective firing range, accuracy, and armor-piercing effect, according to our experts, make it a leader in its market segment. The upgraded grenade launcher can effectively engage a wide range of targets on the battlefield. These include tanks and other heavy armored vehicles, including those with dynamic protection and additional screens, any lightly armored vehicles, combat vehicle crews, enemy personnel, fire weapons, fortifications, shelters, and other military facilities. Moreover, the grenade launcher is significantly lighter, reducing strain on soldiers, and is easier to handle,” the corporation added.
While the corporation didn’t reveal the specifications of the new round, footage shown at World Defense Show 2026 indicates that the rounds will have a firing range between 700 and 1,000 meters. That is a serious increase from the average 500 meter range for the previous generation of rounds.
The RPG-29 has proven to be a lethal anti-tank weapon in multiple conflicts. The first destruction of a British Challenger 2 and an American M1 Abrams main battle tanks in Iraq during the invasion of 2003 was attributed to the weapon.
The all-new RPG-29M will likely preform even better. It is significantly lighter, and far easier to use. It also has a longer range and much better accuracy.
