Russian air defenses foiled yet another attempt to target Khmeimim Air Base on the Syrian coast with drones over the night of April 26 and 27.
Khmeimim is one of two facilities the Russian military maintains in areas controlled by Syria’s interim government, with the other being Tartus naval base further down along the coast. The Russian military also keeps a presence at al-Qamishli Airport in the northeast of the country, although that region is controlled by Kurdish forces.
Videos posted to social networks showed anti-aircraft guns engaging at least two drones close to Khmeimim. All drones were reportedly shot down. There were no reports of any casualties or damage.
Reports of attempts to target the Russian bases on the coast with drones began to emerge shortly after the fall of the Assad regime last December.
At around the same time, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service warned that the United States and British intelligence services were preparing “terrorist acts” against Russian bases in Syria, including the use of drones.
The attacks began to increase last March following a brutal government crackdown on the coast that claimed the lives of more than 1,600 civilians, mostly members of the Alawite religious group that makes up the majority of the region’s population. During the killing spree, some 10,000 civilians took shelter at Khmeimim.
In response to the threat, the Russian military expanded its controle around Khmeimim and resumed helicopter patrols over the coast.
While these measures, in addition to air defenses, have so far managed to foil all drone attacks, the situation worsened recently with five attacks being reported in the last five days. Interestingly, no group has so far claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.
Moscow and Damascus maintain high levels of communications, but an agreement on the future of Russian bases is yet to be reached.
Government forces have so far done nothing to crop attacks on Russian bases. This could eventually force the Russian military to further expand its control around the bases, or even to identify and target the cells responsible for the attacks. These measures can be, however, carried out in cooperation with the government.
