On October 17, the Russian military advanced deeper into the city of Kupyansk and imposed control over two other settlements elsewhere in the Kharkiv direction.
The Zapad [West] Group of Forces has reportedly imposed control of all the areas to the north of Kuznechnaya street in the center of Kupyansk following fierce clashes with Kiev forces. It’s worth noting here that most of the city’s eastern and western parts are already under the control of Russian troops.
The remaining Ukrainian troops in Kupyansk are currently cornered along Pryvokzal’na street, between Kuznechnaya and the southern part of the city. The southern outskirts of the city are also still under Ukrainian control.
Recent videos indicate that the drone operators of the Zapad Group of Forces are targeting any Ukrainian military vehicles attempting to enter Kupyansk, or just moving near the city.
In addition to ongoing operations in Kupyansk, the Zapad Group of Forces continues to advance in the pocket to the east of the Oskil River, between the city and Kolisnykivka.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the group had imposed control of Peschanoye, which is located to the southeast of Kupyansk. Russian troops apparently attacked the settlement from Stepova Novoselivka, advancing along the railroad.
The capture of the settlement indicates that Ukrainian defense lines in this pocket east of the Oskil are also experiencing difficulties. The situation will likely get even worse when Kupyansk is fully cleared by Russian troops. The chances of Kiev holding onto the pocket after that are very slim.
To the north in Kharkiv, the Sever [North] Group of Forces has been also making gains. According to the Russian MoD, the group captured Tykhe, located just a few kilometers to the east of Vovchansk.
From Tykhe, Russian troops could attack Kiev forces in Vovchanski Khutory to the south. And from there, it would be possible to maneuver towards the southern outskirts of Vovchansk. This would allow the troops to avoid fighting in the forest to the east of Vovchansk, as well as to cut the main route linking the settlement with Bilyi Kolodyaz further to the south.
The recent advance by the Russian military in Kharkiv suggests that Kiev forces simply lack the resources, especially manpower, to hold onto its defenses in that direction.
The situation will not likely get any better as recent reports indicate that Ukraine is allocating more resources to the Donetsk direction, mainly to defend the city of Pokrovsk which is nearly besieged. In the end, Kiev, which is prioritizing media and politics over military strategy, will likely get a defeat in Kypyansk and another in Pokrovs.
