On October 31, the Russian military expanded its control in the northern part of Pokrovsk, mounting more pressure on remaining Ukrainian troops in the city and nearby areas in Donetsk, including Myrnohrad.
The Tsentr [Center] Group of Forces has reportedly captured most of the Dinasevsky neighborhood on Metallurgov Street, which is located in the northern part of Pokrovsk just a few kilometers south of Rodynske – already under Russian control – and right to the west of the main road linking the city with Dobropillya further to the north.
Recent reports also indicate that the Tsentr Group of Forces is currently working to expand its control in the outskirts of Rodynske.
To the west of Pokrovsk, the Tsentr Group of Forces also advanced northward, reportedly reaching the southern outskirts of Grishino.
Meanwhile to the east of the city, the drone units of the Tsentr Group of Forces have reportedly completely cut the road leading to Myrnohrad, tightening the siege on Ukrainian troops there.
In Myrnohrad itself, Kiev forces are still fighting on orders of their command. They are reportedly using high-rise buildings to hold onto their positions in the eastern part of the city. However, they are taking heavy losses and likely running low on supplies.
In addition, Ukrainian troops were recently ambushed by the Tsentr Group of Forces in the area of mines number five and six.
Kiev forces are clearly on their way to lose the battle in Pokrovsk. Despite this, Kiev continues to push more reinforcements into the city.
In a video posted recently to social networks, a Ukrainian soldier reports that his unit was sent to Pokrovsk as reinforcements. Only a part of the group made it to the city, sustaining heavy losses: many from the unit were either killed or wounded. Now, they are trapped in a basement, hiding from constant, powerful strikes by Russian artillery and drones. According to him, now they themselves need help.
Upon orders from President Vladimir Putin, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on October 30 that it will allow foreign journalists, including Ukrainian ones, to visit the areas blocked by Ukrainian troops in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, in addition to the city of Kupyansk in Kharkiv which is experiencing a similar situation.
“The Russian command is prepared to cease hostilities for 5 to 6 hours in these areas, as well as to provide corridors for unrestricted entry and exit for groups of representatives of foreign media, including Ukrainian ones, provided there will be security guarantees for both journalists and Russian military personnel,” the ministry said in a statement.
Putin’s initiative shows high trust in the Russian military stance in Pokrovsk, and is likely meant to send a message to the West, especially the United States, that Ukraine can not win, even with more support.
Kiev, of course, refused, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhy prohibiting foreign and Ukrainian media from traveling to the three cities.
The Russian MoD on October 31 called the Ukrainian decision “an official recognition of the catastrophic situation” for Ukrainian troops in the cities.
“In doing so, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine confirmed that there are no entry or exit opportunities to leave encircled positions for journalists or servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, except for Russian security corridors,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The ban on entering these ‘pockets’ for journalists of foreign and Ukrainian media through corridors provided by the Russian Ministry of Defence is needed for the Kiev regime to conceal the real situation on the front line and deceive the world community and residents of Ukraine,” the ministry continued.
“The ultimate goal of these actions is to maintain favourable conditions of the Kiev regime’s establishment to receive and continue plundering funds sent by Western sponsors to the war against Russia,” it added.
Later reports from Ukraine revealed that Kiev had sent its commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi close to Pokrovsk to prepare a counterattack with whatever troops he could amass. The aim of this move is likely to delay the fall of the city, even if just for a few days.
“Fierce fighting continues for Pokrovsk. The situation there is very difficult. We are doing everything to strengthen our positions and provide the necessary support to our defenders,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel on October 31.
The whole situation in Pokrovsk shows that Ukraine continues to prioritize its image in the media over actual military strategy.
The logical course of action is for Ukraine to save the lives of its troops by withdrawing them and reorganizing its defenses behind Pokrovsk. However, Kiev prefers to fight a lost battle to the last soldier to preserve a media image that secures strong support from the U.S. and the rest of the West.
