On November 22, the Russian military expanded its control to the west and southwest of Pokrovsk in Donetsk as it continued work to secure the city itself.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in its daily briefing that the Tsentr [Center] Group of Forces, mainly the 2nd Army, is working to secure the Tsentralny and Gornyak microdistricts inside Pokrovsk, as well as in the western industrial area. Some Ukrainian troops are still trapped there.
Meanwhile, a major push by the Tsentr Group of Forces was reported to the west of the city, mainly along the road leading to Myrnohrad, also known as Dimitrov.
Russian troops captured the southern part of Rivne, which is located right to the north of the road, and stormed the western part of Myrnohrad. In Rivne, three Ukrainian troops laid down their arms and surrendered, according to the Russian MoD.
The ministry also reported gains by the Tsentr Group of Forces, specifically by the 51st Army, in the Vostochny and Zapadny microdistricts. It said that 22 buildings were “liberated” there, as well as in the southern part of the large settlement. Other reports indicate that the entire southern part is now under the control of Russian troops.
“Over the past 24 hours in Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk) direction, up to 250 troops, two armored personnel carriers, two field artillery guns, and one motor vehicle have been neutralised,” the ministry added.
Kiev forces lost 30 of the troops and the two armored personnel carriers during five counterattacks close to Grishino, according to the ministry.
Further away from Pokrovsk, to the east in Donetsk, the Russian MoD announced that the Yug [South] Group of Forces had captured Zvanovka, right to the south of the city of Siversk. The 88th Separate Motorised Rifle Brigade led the attack, the ministry said.
Russian troops also made additional gains in the southern and eastern parts of Siversk itself. Kiev forces are still showing resistance, however.
The capture of Zvanovka will allow the Yug Group of Forces to advance towards the southwestern part of Siversk. Such a maneuver could seal the fate of the city.
All in all, Ukraine is nearing a crushing defeat in Pokrovsk, and heading towards another in Siversk. The situation in Krasn Lyman to the north of the latter is not any better. In addition, Kiev forces have already lost Kupyansk in Kharkiv, and their defenses are collapsing all around Huliapole in Zaporozhye.
While Kiev is doing everything it could to keep fighting, it is clear that it no longer could afford the human cost. Going down this path will lead to a complete collapse.
