The Russian military has broken through Ukrainian defenses in the direction of Zaporozhye, taking over a key settlement.
On October 7, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Vostok [East] Group of Forces had captured Novovasilovskoye along the bank of the Yanchur River. The settlement was stormed by the 394th Motorised Rifle Regiment assigned to 5th Combined Arms Army.
“In the course of the offensive actions, the Vostok Group of Forces liberated Novovasilovskoye and hoisted the flags of the Russian Federation. The servicemen have taken control of an area exceeding four square kilometres on the right bank of the Yanchur River,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The Vostok Group of Forces continue to conduct combat operations pushing the enemy out of fortified positions and liberating the lands of Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk regions,” it added.
Footage released by the ministry indicates that the final attack on the settlement was facilitated by intensive airstrikes with guided glide bombs and drone attacks.
By capturing Novovasilovskoye, the Vostok Group of Forces has effectively broke through Ukrainian defenses between Vyshneve, located to the north in Dnepropetrovsk, and Poltavka, further to the south in Zaporozhye, splitting this entire line in half.
Kiev forces in Poltavka are now facing a very bad situation. In fact, it has been already reported that Russian troops were developing their attack on the settlement.
The situation in Okhotnyche and Movomykolaivka, located between Poltavka and Novovasilovskoye, appears to be even worse. Russian troops were advancing towards the eastern outskirts of the two settlements from Olhivske. Now, they are also under fire from Novovasilovskoye.
Ukraine could send reinforcements to strengthen its defenses between Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk. However, this is guaranteed to cause trouble, especially in the Dobropillia salient and around the city of Pokrovsk in the direction of Donetsk.
Kiev forces are already facing some serious progress there from the Tsentr [Center] Group of Forces. On October 5 it was reported that Russian troops had made some measurable gains in the western outskirts of Pokrovsk, tightening their fire control over the key city. The troops also advanced around Chervonyi Lyman, which is located to the northeast of the city, threatening the route linking it with Dobropillia to the north.
All in all, Ukraine has clearly begun to pay the price for sending all of its elite formations in the Dobropillia salient and Pokrovsk. This is not just clear between Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk, but also between the cities of Liman and Seversk in Donetsk and in the city of Kupyansk in the Khakriv direction.
