The Russian military is closing in on Seversk in the Donetsk direction and Kiev forces seem incapable of holding onto their positions around the city.
On October 5, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Yug (South) Group of Forces had captured Kuzminovka, located just a few kilometers to the south of Seversk. Just a day earlier, the ministry confirmed that Fedorivka, further to the south, was fully secured.
The next target for the Yug Group of Forces will likely be Zvanivka, the last settlement before the southern outskirts of Seversk. Russian troops will likely attempt to storm the settlement from Pereizne and Kuzminovka at the same time. The troops could also start an operation to clear a pocket held by Kiev forces between Pereizne and Vyimka.
To the north of Seversk, Russian troops are already reported to have reached the northern outskirts of the city. However, a foothold is yet to be established there.
Further to the northwest, the Yug Group of Forces is facing fierce resistance from Kiev forces in the eastern outskirts of Dronivka.
Battles also continue to the northwest in Yampil, which directly overlooks the main route linking Seversk with Liman to the north in Donetsk. The fall of the settlement would be a blow for Ukrainian troops in both key cities.
It’s worth noting that the Yug Group of Forces is already approaching Liman. Russian troops are expanding their control around Zarichne, located to the east of the city, and are reported to have reached the outskirts of Stavky to the northeast after repelling a Ukrainian counterattack.
Preparations for a direct attack on Liman seem underway. The Russian military has already stepped up strikes on supply routes leading to the city, even taking out a bridge near Raihorodka that was used by Kiev forces to bring in reinforcements.
According to the Russian MoD, the Yug Group of Forces inflicted heavy losses on Kiev forces in Donetsk in Seversk and several other areas in Donetsk in the last 24 hours.
“The AFU [Armed Forces of Ukraine] losses amounted to up to 130 troops, three armoured fighting vehicles, nine motor vehicles, and one artillery gun. One electronic warfare station and one ammunition depot were neutralized,” the ministry said in its daily briefing.
While a major collapse of Ukrainian defenses between Seversk and Liman is not to be expected, the situation of Kiev forces in this part of Donetsk will not likely improve. Seversk appeared to be on its way to be taken over by the Russian military, although this could take some time. Liman will also face even more pressure.
