On January 6, the Russian military advanced towards the key city of Orikhiv from two directions amid futile Ukrainian attempts to stabilize the front in Zaporozhye.
To the east of Orikhiv, the Vostok [East] Group of Forces expanded its control around Huliapole. Russian forces advanced to the west of the city, reaching the eastern outskirts of Zalinskoe and the southeastern outskirts of Staroukrainka. An area of 3,7 square kilometers was cleared in the process.
This successful push was facilitated by intense air and artillery strikes, in addition to drone attacks that limited Kiev forces ability to organize new defenses to the west of Huliapole.
Huliapole is located more than 37 kilometers to the east of Orikhiv. However, advances are being reported almost everyday, which means that Russian troops could reach the city within a few months, or even weeks if Ukrainian defenses in this direction experience another collapse.
Meanwhile to the west of Orikhiv, advance by the Vostok Group of Forces was also reported, mainly close to the large settlement of Stepnohirsk.
Russian troops pushed to the east of Stepnohirsk, reaching the western outskirts of Novoyakovlevka and Pavlovka. Quickly after that, the troops stormed Novoyakovlevka. According to preliminary reports, at least half of the settlement has been captured.
Novoyakovlevka is located 22 kilometers to the west of Orikhiv, close to one of the roads linking the city with Zaporizhia’s capital. While it will also take Russian troops months to reach Orikhiv from this direction, the drone units of the Vostok Group of Forces could soon begin targeting the city’s supply lines from there.
Orikhiv is a key logistics and command hub of Kiev forces. The Vostok Group of Forces is already in control of most settlements to the south of the city. Thus, Russian troops reaching it from the east or west could very much strangle Ukrainian defenses there.
Ukraine deployed large reinforcements, including multiple assault formations and mercenary groups, in several directions in Zaporizhia over the last few weeks. However, it is clear now that these measures have failed to stop the advance of the Russian military, which maintains absolute superiority in both manpower and firepower.
