The Russian military destroyed four American-made AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder counter-battery radar of Kiev forces using first-person view (FPV) suicide drones over the past month.
Videos showing the destruction of the radars surfaced online between July 30 and August 27. All four radars were apparently targeted in the direction of Donetsk. The drones used were all guided via fiber-optic cables, meaning completely resistant to jamming.
The AN/TPQ-36 was developed in the mid-late 1970s by Hughes Aircraft Company to locate the source of artillery, rocket and mortar fire. The system is currently being manufactured by Northrop Grumman and ThalesRaytheonSystems.
The X-band radar scans the horizon over a 90° sector several times a second, intercepting and automatically tracking hostile projectiles, then computing back along the trajectory to the origin.
The radar can detect and report the positions of up to ten different weapons in seconds, at a maximum range of 24 kilometers.
Ukraine began receiving counter-battery radars from the AN/TPQ family in 2015. After the start of the Russian special military operations, the supplies increased. It is unknown, however, how many AN/TPQ-36 have been supplied to Kiev forces, so far.
The Russian military expanded the use of FPV suicide drones significantly over the past year. Recent reports suggest that hundreds of such drones are being deployed by the Russian military every day, with some sources even reporting as many as 1,000 attacks a day.
The range of these drones have already reached 20-30 kilometers. Work is said to be ongoing on new types with a range of up to 50 kilometers.
