On May 13th, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation achieved another significant victory in the ongoing offensive on the Donbass frontlines, liberating the village of Mirolyubovka in the Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) direction. The ministry of Defense if the Russian Federation declared that units of the Center group of forces successfully completed the mop up operations in the settlement, marking another step toward the complete liberation of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Recent battles south of Pokrovsk have exhausted the defending Ukrainian forces, which were thrown into counteroffensive operations near Kotlino west of Pokrovsk. The Ukrainian command redirected resources to the western flank of the Pokrovsk front, perceiving the eastern sector as less threatening. Seizing this opportunity, Russian troops, after regrouping and reinforcing, launched an offensive toward Malinovka located northeast of Pokrovsk, with the broader objective of cutting the H-32 highway, which is a strategically important supply route for the Ukrainian garrison. Russian assault groups crossed the highway and engaged Ukrainian troops on the eastern outskirts of Malinovka by May 4.

Developing their offensive across the road, the Russian military was securing the flank, expanding its zone of control in the area of the Mirolyubovka water reservoir. In early May, Russian units advanced along the water reservoir, penetrating the center of the village of Mirolyubovka. Despite Ukrainian counterattacks, Russian forces secured their foothold on the southern streets of the village. The advancing Russian troops pushed Ukrainian forces to the northern outskirts. On May 13, the village came under the full Russian control.
The recent Russian advances have stabilized vulnerable sections of the front and weakened Ukrainian defenses east of the Pokrovsk-Mirnograd urban agglomeration. The resumed offensive east of Pokrovsk amid the constant pressure on the western flank may force the Ukrainian military to split defending forces, including between the two strategically dangerous directions of Pokrovsk and Konstantinovka, further weakening Kyiv’s operational capabilities in the entire region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated in late March that 70% of the DPR was under Russian control. Since the beginning of May, Russian forces have taken control of Lysovka, Lipovoe, Troitskoye, and Kotlyarovka. The liberation of Mirolyubovka and other key settlements demonstrates continued progress in securing the region. As Russian forces maintain momentum, further breakthroughs could soon crumble the entire Ukrainian defense lines, bringing Moscow closer to its strategic objectives in Donbass.
