On November 24, the Russian military reached the eastern outskirts of Huliaipole in Zaporozhye after breaking through Ukrainian defenses and capturing Zatyshshya, the last settlement before the key city from that direction.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the attack on Zatyshshya was led by the 114th Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 5th Guards Combined Arms Army, which is a part of the Vostok [East] Group of Forces.
Assault groups broke through a line of fortification before taking over the settlement, the ministry said in a statement, adding that Kiev forces suffered significant losses, including “more than 20 armored and motor vehicles and a large number of manpower were neutralized.”
Russian troops are also said to be in control of Zelenyi Hai and Vysoke to the southeast of Zatyshshya. This is yet to be confirmed by the Russian MoD, however.
After reaching the eastern outskirts of Huliaipole, the Vostok Group of Forces wasted no time. According to preliminary reports, Russian reconnaissance groups have already begun operating in the eastern and southeastern parts of the city, which is considered a stronghold for Kiev forces.
It’s worth noting that the Vostok Group of Forces have been also advancing south along the Haichur River towards the northern outskirts of Huliaipole.
Russian troops are currently situated in Nove Zaporizhzhya, less than 20 kilometers to the north of the key city. An attack on Dobropillya to the south is already underway. Operations to expand control to the east, all the way to Solodke, are also ongoing.
In addition to these two directions, the Vostok Group of Forces could advance towards the southern outskirts of Huliaipole from its positions in Dorozhnianka, the last settlement before the city from the southern direction.
The battle in Huliaipole will likely begin within a few days. The Russian military will likely storm the east from the east as soon as it is possible in order to prevent Kiev forces from fortifying their positions there, as well as to distract them in other areas nearby.
The ongoing collapse around Huliaipole is only one of several examples that highlight the degradation of Kiev forces, which are facing serious shortages, most importantly in manpower.
