Russia’s state tech corporation Rostec announced on May 29 that it had delivered the first batch of modernized BMD-2M airborne infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) with the Bereg combat turret to the Russian military.
“The High-Precision Systems holding company of the Rostec State Corporation delivered a batch of modernized BMD-2 airborne combat vehicles with the Bereg combat turret to the customer, as part of a state defense contract. The Bereg combat compartment increases the vehicle’s firepower, extends its target engagement range and gives Airborne Troops units broader battlefield capabilities. The BMD-2s underwent a major overhaul and extensive modernization to the BMD-2M configuration,” the state corporation said in a statement.
The BMD-2M is fully amphibious and air-droppable, with excellent off-road speed and maneuverability. It is powered by a diesel engine capable of reaching highway speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour, and can cross rough terrain with its adjustable hydropneumatic suspension
The Bereg combat turret features a Shipunov 2A42 30 mm autocannon with 300 rounds, a PKT 7,62 mm machine gun with 2,940 rounds, in addition to two launchers for 9M133 Kornet anti-tank guided missiles.
Rostec also noted in its statement that the turret is equipped with an improved sighting system, and an upgraded fire control system.
In addition, a photo shared by Rostec revealed that the newly delivered BMD-2M came with enhanced protections against drones.
The IFVs are equipped with an anti-drone upper cage, with mesh nets on the sides, in addition to an unidentified electronic warfare system.
The BMD-2M is mainly used by the elite Russian Airborne Forces, more known as the VDV, who are currently engaged in fighting on more than a front in the special military operation in Ukraine. The new upgraded IFVs will bring much needed capabilities to these forces.
