The Russian military repelled a massive Ukrainian attack, destroying more than one hundred aerial and seaborne drones, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on May 17.

Air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 51 Ukrainian aerial drones over the Crimean Peninsula and 44 drones over the Krasnodar region, the ministry said, adding that six more drones were shot down over the Belgorod region and another drone over the Kursk region.

In addition, Russian naval aircraft and patrol boats destroyed six Ukrainian seaborne drones in the Black Sea overnight, according to the ministry.

A day earlier, Russian naval aircraft eliminated 15 Ukrainian seaborne drones heading to Crimea, the ministry said. Videos showing some of the interceptions were released.

A woman and a child were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack in Belgorod, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on his official Telegram channel.

Furthermore, a fire broke out at the Tuapse oil refinery in Krasnodar due to the fall of a drone. The fire was however fully extinguished and no one was hurt in the drone attack, according to the TASS news agency.

Also in Krasnodar, the city administration’s press office said that urban infrastructure had sustained minor damage while enterprises were operating in normal mode.

Meanwhile in Sevastopol, drone fragments fell on a local electric power substation. The city’s Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev has said that it will take about 24 hours to restore its operation while classes in city schools and kindergarten have been canceled for this period.

This was Ukraine’s largest drone attack on Russian territory this year so far. Despite causing some losses, the attack mostly failed thanks to the quick and professional reaction of Russian air defenses and naval forces.

The Kiev regime intensified attacks on Russia in recent weeks in what appears to be an attempt to make up for the never ending failures of its forces in the battlefield.

In response, the Russian military resumed group strikes on military and energy infrastructure targets in Ukraine. It also stepped up offensive operations in the directions of Donetsk, Kharkiv and others, capturing more territory from Kiev forces.
