The Russian military advanced by early September 17 in several directions in the Kharkiv region, including within the city of Kupyansk, as well as in the direction of Siversk in the neighboring region of Donetsk.
In the forest between Volchansk and Synelnykove, which are located to the northeast of the city of Kharkiv, Russian troops pushed forward and managed to secure several firing points and fortifications despite facing some real resistance from Kiev forces, which reportedly brought in reinforcements to Melovoe and Khatne, far to the west.
Meanwhile, further to the south, Russian troops advanced further in Kupyansk. The troops captured most of the city’s northern part, appalling multiple Ukrainian counter attacks. However, Kiev forces are reported to have entrenched themselves in high-rise buildings in the center of the city, where heavy fighting is taking place.
To increase pressure on Kiev forces, Russian troops have reportedly begun a push in the northwestern outskirts of Kupyansk from the direction of Holubivka.
The Russian breakthrough in Kupyansk, which was the result of a well-planned infiltration through an inactive gas pipeline, was a blow to Kiev, which is reported to be planning to give the defense of the city top priority. This will likely have a bad effect on Ukrainian defenses in other directions.
Videos from Kharkiv show three airstrikes with LMUR and Kh-38 missiles that targeted buildings occupied by Kiev forces near Volchansk, as well as recent drone attacks on Ukrainian troops from elsewhere in the direction.
Meanwhile, in the direction of Siversk, the Russian military made gains in several areas. The troops secured vast parts of the Serebryansky forest. Another push was reported from the western outskirts of Hryhorivka in the southern direction.
The most intense fighting is, however, reported to be taking place in the western outskirts of Yampol, with Kiev forces struggling to push back advancing Russian troops.
The capture of Yampol by the Russian military, which could happen soon, will put a key Ukrainian supply route between Siversk and Liman at risk.
Videos from this direction show several recent drone strikes that targeted Ukrainian posts and equipment, including one main battle tank.
In its daily briefing, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the Zapad [West] and Yug [South] group of forces, which operate in Kharkiv, in addition to Siversk and other directions in Donetsk, had inflicted heavy losses on Kiev forces.
“The enemy losses amounted to more than 250 troops, one British-made Snatch armoured fighting vehicle, 28 motor vehicles, and two artillery guns,” the ministry said, detailing the work of the Zapad Group of Forces over the last 24 hours.
During the same period, Kiev forces lost “up to 255 troops, one tank, six armoured fighting vehicles, 17 motor vehicles, and four field artillery guns, including one U.S.-made 155-mm M777 howitzer,” one the hands of the Yug Group of Forces, according to the ministry, which noted that “two electronic warfare stations and five ammunition and POL (petroleum oil and lubricant) depots” were also destroyed.
The Russian military advance in Kharkiv and Siversk will significantly increase the pressure on Kiev forces, which are already suffering from shortages, most notably in manpower.
