On January 5, the Russian military expanded its control in Sumy by capturing another settlement along the border from Kiev forces.
The settlement, Grabovskoye, was captured by the 34th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Sever [North] Group of Forces, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which revealed in a statement that Ukrainian troops took heavy losses during the battle there.
“Russian troops hit main centres of enemy resistance by precise strikes of artillery and FPV drones. The enemy suffered losses and was forced to abandon its positions and leave the settlement. Acting in small groups, assault detachments were able to gain a foothold in the settlement and mop up buildings, basements, and nearby forest belts,” the ministry said.
“Units of the Sever Group of Forces move forward creating a security band in border areas of Sumy and Kharkov regions on a daily basis,” it added.
Grabovskoye is located right to the south of Vysoke, which the Sever Group of Forces captured late last month in a lightning cross-border attack.
Russian troops in Grabovskoye and Vysoke are now attempting to advance west, towards Taratutino, and even Krasnopillia. The latter is located on a road leading to the capital of Sumy. The settlement is likely the initial target of the ongoing attack in this part of Sumy.
In addition to the attack between Grabovskoye and Vysoke, the Sever Group of Forces recently crossed the border in a new part of Sumy and stormed Komarivka.
According to preliminary reports, the settlement has been captured. This has not been confirmed by the Russian MoD, yet. Clashes are also being reported to the west of the settlement, mainly close to Kharkivka which is also located along the border.
The goal of the ongoing attack in Komarivka is likely to further distract Kiev forces in Sumy, and pressure key roads leading to the region’s capital from the north.
All in all, it is clear that Russian military operations to establish a security zone along the border with Sumy are once again gaining momentum. These efforts began following the failed Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Kursk, which borders Sumy, from more than a year ago.
These cross-border attacks will further deplete Kiev forces, and affect their ability to fight in other directions, even far away from Sumy.
