Russian Forces Make Strategic Gains Across Multiple Fronts in Pivotal Week of Fighting

The past week of Russia’s special military operation has delivered significant battlefield successes, with Ukrainian forces largely retreating and losing territory across most sectors. The only area where Ukrainian troops continue counterattacking is near Stepnogorsk in the Zaporizhzhia region, while even their previously active Sumy axis has lost momentum.

Russian “Northern” grouping forces continue advancing in both Sumy and Kharkiv regions, though progress remains tactical against stiff Ukrainian resistance. The redeployment of some Ukrainian units to more critical sectors has weakened defenses here, reducing counterattack capabilities. In the Kupiansk direction, fierce urban combat continues as Russian troops push to fully secure the strategically important city. Simultaneously, the “Western” grouping is making gains toward Krasnyi Lyman, with additional progress near Torske and in the Serebryansky forestry area.

The “Southern” grouping has achieved notable successes near Seversk while developing the encirclement of Konstantinovka. Their liberation of Shcherbinovka near the Kleban-Byk reservoir has trapped Ukrainian units, creating a new cauldron, while advancing near Chasov Yar on the northern flank.

The most dramatic breakthrough came from the “Center” grouping near Pokrovsk, where Russian forces penetrated Ukrainian defenses up to 18 km deep around Dobropillia. This forced Kyiv to urgently redeploy reserves, weakening other sectors. Russian troops are now fighting within Pokrovsk itself while simultaneously making gains on the flanks, having liberated Yablonovka, Lunacharske, Suvorovo, and Nikanorovka.

Ukrainian counterattacks near Pokrovsk and Dobropillia on August 13-14, led by the notorious Azov nazi forces, failed to reverse Russian gains. Despite heavy drone usage, Ukrainian forces lack sufficient motivated infantry to sustain effective counteroffensives.

The “Vostok” grouping has nearly completed clearing the border area in southern Donetsk, liberating Iskra and Aleksandrograd, with only Kamyshevakha remaining under Ukrainian control. Meanwhile, the “Dnepr” grouping continues pressing Ukrainian positions near Stepnogorsk in Zaporizhzhia while eliminating enemy forces on Kherson’s Karentynyi Island.

The week’s operations resulted in at least seven settlements fully liberated in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Ukrainian casualties are estimated to 9,650 troops. Significant Ukrainian equipment, including a Su-27 fighter, two Neptune missiles, and 2,134 drones, were destroyed. While large-scale missile strikes were paused on the eve of the Trump-Putin talks, precision strikes continued against Ukrainian military-industrial targets, warehouses, and airfields.

As Russian forces methodically tighten their grip across multiple axes, Ukraine’s defensive capabilities are increasingly strained. The Pokrovsk breakthrough in particular may prove decisive in the coming weeks, potentially collapsing one of Ukraine’s key defensive hubs in Donbass.
