The Pokrovsk (formerly Krasnoarmeysk) direction has become the focal point of Russia’s grinding offensive in eastern Ukraine, with Moscow’s forces applying increasing pressure on Ukrainian defenses through flanking maneuvers and localized breakthroughs in the city. Russian troops continue advancing on multiple axes, threatening to encircle key strongholds and sever Ukrainian supply lines in what could become a decisive push in the Donbass campaign.

Russian groups are operating on the streets of the cities, advancing in Pokrovsk from the southwest and in Mirnograd from the east. Relentless Russian shelling targets Ukrainian defensive networks, signaling Moscow’s intent to destabilize rear areas before committing to a full-scale assault. The bombardment disrupts troop rotations and supply movements, weakening Ukraine’s ability to mount coordinated counterattacks.

According to preliminary reports, Russian forces took control of a mine on the northeastern outskirts of Mirnograd. As a result of a decisive Russian assault, large Ukrainian stronghold in the industrial facilities was captured. If confirmed, it paves the way for further Russian advance in the city from the northeastern direction.

On the western flank, Russian units have intensified attacks around Kotlyno, fighting through fields and tree lines to consolidate positions southwest of Pokrovsk. At the same time, Russian forces began attacks to the north toward Grishino, encircling Pokrovsk from the west. The advance here aims to outflank Ukrainian forces while providing a staging ground for further pushes toward the city’s outskirts. On the very outskirts of the city, in Pershe Travnya, Russian troops have seized most of the settlement after fierce street battles, though Ukrainian counterattacks persist. Control of this settlement allows Russian artillery to menace Pokrovsk’s southern approaches, compounding Kyiv’s logistical headaches.

South of Pokrovsk, Russian forces took control of Novoukrainka, securing the village after intense fighting. Ukrainian troops retreated northward, regrouping near Chunishyne, where they are attempting to establish a new defensive line behind the natural barrier of the Glubokaya Balka ravine. Russian assaults on Chunishyne have devolved into close-quarters combat, with neither side yet gaining a clear upper hand. These battles, though tactically inconclusive for now, serve a strategic purpose: stretching Ukraine’s reserves thin across a widening front.

On the northern flank, one of the most critical battles is unfolding around the Krasnolyamanskaya mine, a heavily fortified Ukrainian stronghold east of Rodinske. Russian assault groups have penetrated the mine’s technical buildings, though Ukrainian reserves have been rushed in to prevent a full takeover. If Russian forces consolidate control here, it would pave the way toward Rodinske, a key logistical hub supplying Ukrainian troops in Mirnograd.

The mine’s capture would mark a turning point in the broader encirclement operation, as it sits along vital routes that sustain Ukrainian defenses in the agglomeration. Ukrainian forces are struggling to hold the line, but the constant pressure from multiple directions is stretching their reserves thin.

Meanwhile, Russian troops have already approached the village of Krasny Liman (Chervony Liman), which was turned into another Ukrainian stronghold to protect Rodinske.

The situation for Ukraine’s garrison in the agglomeration is growing increasingly dire. With Russian forces applying pressure from multiple axes, Ukrainian commanders face difficult choices, either commit dwindling reserves to hold key positions or risk a collapse of their defensive lines.

If Russian troops secure the Krasnolyamanskaya mine and push toward Rodinske, they could effectively cut off Ukrainian forces in Mirnograd, setting the stage for a larger encirclement. Particularly amid the ongoing attacks towards Grishino, the last road to the city, from both southern and western direction. The fall of these positions would leave Ukrainian troops in the agglomeration vulnerable to being trapped in a shrinking pocket, much like previous Russian victories in Avdeevka, Ugledar, Chasov Yar and other fortresses.

The Kremlin’s tactics is clear, to avoid costly frontal assaults on Pokrovsk itself while chipping away at its defensive belt. Russian forces threaten to sever the T0509 highway, Pokrovsk’s last reliable supply route. The pincer could snap shut, trapping Ukrainian units in a shrinking pocket.
