Russia is equipping its Geran-type one-way attack drones with a new electronic warfare system that blinds Ukrainian interceptor drones just as they close in for the kill, a prominent Ukrainian military expert said on August 24.
Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov described the system in a Telegram post, saying it targets the video link that Ukrainian interceptor pilots rely on to visually track and strike incoming drones.
The system includes a receiver that detects an approaching interceptor’s video signal, according to the expert, who added that the receiver then activates a transmitter, which broadcasts interference on the exact same frequency the interceptor is using.
Two days earlier, Beskrestnov shared a photo showing the antennas used in one version of the system, which were found among the wreckage of a Geran drone.
The system was most likely developed specifically for the propeller-driven Geran-1 and 2, which are said to be copies of Iran’s Shahed-131 and 136. These two versions have a range of around 900 kilometers and 2,500 kilometers, respectively, with a moderate cruise speed of around 180 kilometers per hour.
Ukraine has increasingly relied on first-person-view interceptor drones to shoot down Geran-1 and 2 drones. Any onboard electronic warfare system that defeats those interceptors would pose a direct challenge to that defense.
While Russia is upgrading these older versions to make them immune to interceptors, it is also expanding the production of jet-powered Geran-4 and 5, which can reach speeds of 850 kilometers per hour and 1,000 kilometers per hour, respectively. At these higher speeds, interceptors can’t simply catch up with these drones.
