The most intense fighting is currently taking place along key sections of the front line, particularly in the Kupiansk and Pokrovsk areas. Ukraine is launching a counterattack in the Sumy region. Russian troops are trying to achieve their summer campaign objectives before the ground becomes too muddy.
Sumy section – In the Sumy region, there has been an increase in the intensity of combat clashes. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have attacked Russian positions along the line of contact up to seven times in the areas surrounding Yunakovka, Andreevka, Belovody, Alekseevka and Sadki. However, they incurred losses and failed to achieve success.
The Russians are seeking to deprive their enemy of their main weapon in the current war: strike drones. The airfield in Konotop in the Sumy region was hit by Russian Geran-2 UAVs. The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ drone control center, as well as a number of hangars and warehouses containing ammunition and military equipment, was destroyed. Additionally, the Russian Armed Forces are using Geran drones against both stationary targets and enemy personnel. For instance, a temporary deployment point for units of the 156th Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the area of Zelenaya Dubrava was hit.
According to various estimates, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have suffered total losses of at least 190 people in this area.
It should be noted that the Russian army’s offensive on the Sumy section of the front has slowed down. In mid-to-late August, the command began transferring the most combat-ready units and formations to the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, which are of higher priority.

Kupyansk section – The Russian Armed Forces are encircling the city of Kupyansk, a key location, from the north and northwest. It is reported that Russian assault groups have reached the Kupyansk Lyceum in the southern part of the city. Capturing this area would allow the Kupyansk-Chuguev highway to be brought under fire control. This road is a vital supply route for the entire Ukrainian Armed Forces garrison in the city. Disrupting logistics would significantly reduce the combat effectiveness of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Thus, the Russian army continues to partially encircle populated areas in order to inflict maximum damage on Ukrainian army units exiting through the resulting ‘bottleneck’.

Krasnolymanskoye section – On 19 September, Russian troops secured their positions on the eastern outskirts of Yampol village after taking full control of Serebryansky Forestry. However, it seems unlikely that they will advance further from this area, as the village is located in low-lying land surrounded by hills to the north and south which are under Ukrainian control. The village of Dronovka was also captured. Clearly, the aim of the Russian Armed Forces is to seize control of the Krasny Liman–Seversk highway and then capture Seversk in a semi-circle.

Pokrovsk section – The battle for Pokrovsk is ongoing, with Russian army units reportedly operating from both the south and the southwest. The Russian infantry are actively using infiltration tactics, sending small assault groups to covertly gather in the rear of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ defenses, allowing them to break through in densely populated urban areas. For instance, Ukrainian soldiers were ambushed in the west of Pokrovsk. This suggests that the Ukrainian Armed Forces do not have a continuous line of defense in Pokrovsk. The Ukrainian command has opted for a focal defense strategy, a tactic dictated by the high activity of FPV drones, which makes it impossible to concentrate large units in one place.

Southern section – The Vostok military group of the Russian Armed Forces is advancing in the Zaporizhzhia region and has captured the village of Novoivanivka. The 394th Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment, part of the 127th Division of the 5th Combined Arms Army, is operating in the area. Russian soldiers are currently finishing off the remaining resistance in the settlement. A total area of approximately 4 square kilometres and 120 buildings have been occupied. Ukraine’s Armed Forces lost up to a company of soldiers in this area. The Russian army’s next targets will most likely be the settlements of Uspenivka and Novonikolaivka. An offensive from Novoivanivka to the west will threaten Huliaipole from the north.

Active combat operations are also underway in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where Russian units are focusing on disrupting the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ logistics. For instance, in the Velikomikhailovka area, FPV drone operators have thwarted the Ukrainian troops’ rotation, destroying enemy vehicles and soldiers in the process.
Conclusion: The Russian Armed Forces continue their offensive on key sections of the front line. The Kupyansk and Pokrovsk directions are the most active sections of the front line, where the Russian army is concentrating its efforts. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are not undertaking any active offensive actions above platoon level. Meanwhile, counterattacks on Russian positions in the Sumy region by forces up to platoon level have not been successful. The Ukrainian army’s de facto transition to a defensive position and refusal to take offensive action may be due to a lack of human and material resources, as well as an intention to wear down the attacking side until the onset of regular rains and autumn mud. Despite mobilization in Ukraine, the vast majority of units are experiencing personnel shortages. Only time will tell how the Ukrainian leadership will solve this acute problem.
