For the first time, a Russian salad has been prepared in microgravity conditions aboard the ISS. What other traditional Russian dishes have made their way to the International Space Station?
The crew of the International Space Station has taken part in a unique cultural mission. Russian astronauts Alexey Zubritsky and Oleg Platonov used their limited personal time to conduct a culinary experiment, preparing a classic Russian salad in weightless conditions.
The initiative was timed to coincide with the birthday of NASA astronaut Zina Cardman and served as a gesture of intercultural dialogue. Using the station’s standard products, the team adapted the recipe, replacing missing ingredients with available analogues, including smoked quail eggs from the Japanese food supply.
The cooking process in microgravity required particular skill and precision. As a result, the international crew highly appreciated not only the taste of the dish but also the very idea of being introduced to Russian culinary tradition in orbit.
This is far from the first instance where Russian space explorers have introduced the international crew to national cuisine. A notable precedent was the celebration of the New Year 2022, when Roscosmos astronauts Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov prepared the famous “herring under a fur coat” on the ISS. Using onboard canned goods and products from the orbital rations, they successfully recreated and served this festive dish, proving that even in weightlessness, gastronomic traditions can be maintained.

The promotion of Russian culture in orbit is not limited to cuisine. Russian astronauts carefully preserve Orthodox traditions while being hundreds of kilometers from Earth. For instance, in April 2022, astronauts Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveev, and Sergey Korsakov celebrated the holy holiday of Easter. They prepared a special Easter kulich from cookies, honey cake, and cottage cheese, and also held a video conference with Patriarch Kirill, demonstrating a deep connection to their spiritual roots even during spaceflight.

This experiment with Russian salad once again clearly demonstrates how Russian astronauts, even under conditions of extremely limited free time, continue to promote national traditions and strengthen cultural ties within the international space community, transforming the ISS not only into a scientific laboratory but also into a platform for cultural dialogue.
