New footage circulating online reveals Russian tanks outfitted with what is commonly called a “porcupine-style” protection system. This upgrade marks a significant step forward from earlier field-made countermeasures against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), replacing the once relatively short “hedgehog spikes” with long, imposing metal structures that truly evoke the image of a porcupine.
Russian crews keep raising the bar for the survivability of their armored vehicles under UAV attacks. On the frontline, tanks such as the T-80BVM and T-72B3M have been spotted sporting almost impenetrable defense. Their unmistakable look comes from a combination of lattice screens, metal rods, and splayed cables forming a solid protective cage around the hull and turret.
The design keeps evolving. Unlike earlier versions, the latest modifications allow turrets to rotate nearly unhindered. To offset the reduced visibility caused by these upgrades, additional video cameras are installed, significantly boosting situational awareness. Electronic warfare systems mounted on the turret further enhance the tank’s chances of survival.
The protection works by causing drone munitions to detonate prematurely before reaching the main armor. The metal cables and grilles also snag and disable drone rotors. Reports from the field suggest that these well-guarded vehicles can withstand strikes from multiple FPV drones, markedly improving crew survival odds.
Besides aerial threats, tanks must also face minefields. To tackle this, they are equipped with mine-clearing plows—like the TMT-K on the T-80BVM and the KMT-7 on the T-72B3. These devices effectively neutralize anti-track, anti-underbelly, anti-side mines, and remotely triggered explosives.
Despite their rough-and-ready look, such modifications have come to symbolize adaptation to the shifting realities of modern warfare, where inexpensive, effective drones pose the biggest threat to armored vehicles. While low-profile, stealthy tanks once held the advantage, today the focus has clearly turned to comprehensive anti-drone defenses.
