The Russian military’s offensive in Kupyansk gained momentum on October 4, but Kiev is still attempting to hold onto the key city.
In a major push, the Zapad [West] Group of Forces broke through Ukrainian defenses between the eastern part of Kupyansk and its eastern outskirts. This successful push in addition to recent advances in the western part of the city left Kiev forces cornered in a narrow strip in the center, mainly along the Privokzalnaya street connected to the southern entrance of the city.
Intensive use of drones by Kiev forces has so far prevented the Russian military from completely besieging the remaining Ukrainian troops in Kupyansk. This will not go on for long, however.
Drone units of the Zapad Group of Forces also stepped up their operations around the city threatening all Ukrainian supply routes.
Some of the Ukrainian troops fighting in Kupyansk are reportedly attempting to flee despite the danger posed by Russian drones and the blocking detachments recently deployed by Kiev. Still, Ukraine insists that Kupyansk is holding. Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov even claimed that the situation in the city had been “stabilized”.
Any breakthrough by the Zapad Group of Forces in the center or the southern part of Kupyansk will likely seal the fate of the city. However, Kiev could order a suicidal counterattack somewhere around the city in last ditch effort to avoid another embarrassing defeat.
Moving to the north in Kharkiv, the Sever [North] Group of Forces has reportedly renewed its offensive from Milove towards Khatnje. It also struck Ukrainian defenses in Chuhunivka.
Russian troops are also still working to expand their control on the left bank of the Volchya River in Volchansk and in the forest west of Synelnykove. Moving closer to the city of Kharkiv, intense strikes targeted Kiev forces in Lyptsi and nearby areas. No advance was reported there, however
Overall, Kiev forces seem incapable of holding up into their remaining positions in Kupyansk. The city will likely be captured by the Russian military in coming weeks, or even soon. This would open the door for more advance in this direction, especially towards Hlushkivka to the south. In other parts of Kharkiv, Ukrainian troops are facing less pressure, but this could also change.
