Russian defense company ZALA on November 2 unveiled its new Z-61, a high-speed reconnaissance drone designed to survive in areas where Ukrainian forces deploy air defense systems and interceptor drones.
In a statement, the company said the drone is already being used in Ukraine and is the first model in a new generation of its reconnaissance-strike systems.
The Z-61 features a front-mounted engine, a modular aluminum fuselage and an onboard system designed to detect approaching threats and help the drone evade them.
Its equipment includes an HD camera and a high-resolution thermal imager, which ZALA says allow operators to identify pursuing interceptor drones while continuing reconnaissance missions. The camera system also provides visibility of threats approaching from behind.
“If someone is trying to maneuver behind you, you can easily outsmart them because you can see their movement perfectly and decide to take evasive action,” a company representative told Rossiyskaya Gazeta, according to ZALA.
The drone also incorporates specialized algorithms and an external-threat detection system designed to improve its survivability against air defense systems and electronic warfare. The company did not disclose its speed, operational range, flight endurance or maximum altitude.
ZALA said the Z-61 is intended for short- and medium-range reconnaissance missions, including detecting and identifying targets, transmitting their coordinates and monitoring the use of loitering munitions. It is compatible with the ground equipment used by the company’s Lancet loitering munition, allowing it to operate within the existing infrastructure supporting the strike system.
The company also released footage showing the Z-61 maneuvering to evade Ukrainian interceptor drones. According to the reported episode, the drone avoided 16 interception attempts during the flight.
ZALA had previously identified the Z-61 in a September 29 announcement, saying Russian marines had demonstrated the drone in operation and highlighting its ability to monitor interceptors attempting to shoot it down. The latest disclosure suggests the drone is nearing mass production.
