The Confederation of Sahel States (AES), which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, announced on December 8 that it will neutralize all aircraft violating its airspace, following reports of violation by Nigeria.
In an official statement, the alliance explained that a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft made an emergency landing in Burkina Faso, and an investigation by Burkinabe authorities revealed that the landing was unauthorized.
The AES condemned “in the strongest terms” the violation of its airspace, and stressed that the air defenses of the alliance are authorized to “neutralize all aircraft that would violate the confederal airspace.” It went on to describe the violation as an “unfriendly act, regardless of international law and international civil/military aviation rules.”
Nigeria said that its C-130 transport plane made a “precautionary landing” in the city of Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, when the crew detected a technical issue after takeoff from commercial hub Lagos, en route to Portugal.
Following the AES statement, Nigeria air force spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame said that the crew was safe in Burkina Faso, and the decision to land there had been taken “in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols”.
The AES was formed last year. It was a direct result of successful coups in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. The alliance states broke away from the regional Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to push back against foreign influence.
Nigeria, West Africa’s largest military power, is a key member of ECOWAS, which maintains close ties with the European Union, especially France.
Since December 7, Nigeria and other ECOWAS members have sent aircraft and troops to help quell a coup in neighboring Benin, a country that borders Burkina Faso. The move was completely aligned with the interests of France, the main backer of current Beninese President Patrice Talon.
The officers who led the coup attempt in Benin appeared to have ideas aligned in general with those of the AES. However, there is no evidence linking them to the alliance, and even the Beninese government and ECOWAS didn’t make any such accusations.
