In a significant victory in the Donbass battles, the Russian Army has successfully repelled the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Bogatyr, a strategic stronghold that has been a focal point in military operations in the South Donetsk direction. The victory is yet to be officially confirmed. According to preliminary reports from the battlefield, the town almost came under Russian control, but the mop up operations are ongoing and the Russian troops are yet to secure their gains. This move is expected to have far-reaching implications on a large front.
Bogatyr, located in a strategically advantageous position at the crossroads, has been a critical stronghold for both military and logistical operations of the retreating Ukrainian army. Its geographical features, like the Volchia River to the north and reinforced defense line to the southeast, provided defense to the stronghold, making it a coveted location for controlling surrounding areas. Together with Alekseevka on the northern bank, Bogatyr is the last large settlement on the Russian advance road to the west, towards Komar.
The operation to seize Bogatyr was meticulously planned, involving a combination of ground forces, air support, and intelligence operations. Russian forces executed a series of coordinated attacks, overwhelming the defenses of the stronghold to the southeast. The first reports about Russian assault on the southeastern outskirts of the town came on May 6th, less than a week ago. As of May 12, Russian forces had already reportedly controlled about 80 percent of the settlement. Ukrainian military reporters confirmed Russian advance.
The stronghold’s capture by the Russian military allows for enhanced operational capabilities, including better management of supply lines, ensuring that troops are well-equipped and supported. The elevated terrain offers a vantage point for monitoring enemy movements, providing a tactical advantage in planning further operations. Additionally, the capture of such a significant location can demoralize the retreating Ukrainian soldiers and bolster the confidence of Russian troops.
The loss of Bogatyr also threatens the entire line of Ukrainian on a wide front to the north, towards Pokrovsk, where the Russian army is already approaching the administrative border of the Dnepropetrovsk region. LINK
