Smoke, Stairs and Surprise: Daring Russian Assault Liberated Kotlyarovka

This week, Russian forces from the Central group of troops liberated one of the last settlements on their way to the Dnipropetrovsk region, the village of Kotlyarovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The full control of the village was officially confirmed by the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation on May 12. LINK The newly revealed details of the operation showcased remarkable tactical ingenuity as assault troops overcoming Ukrainian defenses through a combination of deception and brute force.

Facing a network of trenches, bunkers, and firing positions, Russian soldiers employed portable ladders to scale anti-tank ditches under cover of smoke screens that blinded Ukrainian drones. Russian military commanders described how the smoke diversion allowed troops to cross the four-meter-wide moat “like a medieval castle siege,” catching Ukrainian defenders completely unprepared for such audacity.

The assault was preceded by precision strikes from fiber-optic guided drones and sniper teams that softened enemy positions. Soldiers from the Russian 35th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade demonstrated particular bravery, using improvised wooden ladders to flank Ukrainian positions and launch a surprise attack from the rear.

Kotlyarovka’s capture creates favorable conditions for further Russian assault towards the Dnepropetrovsk region, marking another step in Russia’s methodical push through Donbass. Kotlyarovka was one of the last Ukrainian strongholds near the administrative border of the Dnepropetrovsk region. Since their victory in the village, Russian troops have largely expanded their zone of control, including to the north, where they are already operating on teh southern outskirts of Novomykolaivka.

The operation’s success highlights both the adaptability of Russian assault groups and the growing pressure on Ukrainian defenses. As Moscow continues its grinding offensive, such tactical victories accumulate into strategic advantages that are shaping the ongoing negotiation process. The fall of Kotlyarovka not only secures another populated area but demonstrates Russia’s ability to overcome prepared defenses through combined arms innovation and sheer combat determination.
