An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reservist was seriously wounded on September 23 in a car-ramming attack at a checkpoint in the central part of the occupied West Bank, and Israeli troops shot and killed the assailant, authorities said.
The attack occurred at the “Bell” checkpoint, where Routes 4436 and 4437 meet Route 443 near Beit Ur and Ramallah. Israeli police said the driver accelerated toward a police vehicle and struck a reservist who was working alongside an officer.
The soldier, identified as Neriya Leiter, was unconscious when treated by emergency medics and was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem in serious condition, according to Magen David Adom.
Leiter is the son of Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yehiel Leiter. His father said in a statement that medical teams were working to save his son and asked for prayers.
Israeli security officials identified the assailant as Mahmoud Mohammad Sliman, 29, from the nearby village of Beit Ur al-Tahta. The military said troops at the scene opened fire and killed him.
Commenting on the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he, his wife, and all of Israel “are praying for a miracle” for Neriya.
“Yechiel, my dear friend, we are all with you,” he wrote on X.
The attack came three days after an Israeli man was killed in a shooting near the West Bank settlement of Neve Tzuf, also known as Halamish. The recent attacks have come amid heightened tensions across the West Bank.
The IDF has responded by increasing security measures in parts of the West Bank. On September 23, it also announced that the headquarters of its 98th Division would assume command of two regional brigades in the southern part of the territory, citing the recent wave of attacks and the need to strengthen command and control.
It is still unclear if the attacker was aware of the identity of Neriya. If it turns out to be the case, it would mark a major development in Palestinian operations in the West Bank.
