The wreckage of a Storm Shadow missile launched by Ukraine and intercepted by Russian air defenses was found by divers in the Black Sea close to the coast of the Crimean Peninsula.
In video footage of the wreckage posted to social media on September 6, many key components of the missiles, including the warhead, the engine and parts of the guidance system, appeared to be nearly intact. Right after it was found, the wreckage was recovered by the Russian military for analysis.
While it is unknown when the missile was intercepted, the good condition of the wreckage suggests that this happened very recently.
The last reported interception of the Storm Shadow was on August 7, when the Russian Ministry of Defense said that eight such missiles were shot down. It is very likely that the missile found under water was one of them.
The Storm Shadow is a low-observable, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed by French Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA. The missile features a GPS-aided inertial navigation system with a terrain profile matching system. For terminal guidance, it is equipped with an imaging infrared scene-mapping area correlator system.
The maximum range of the Storm Shadow is 560 kilometers. However, Ukraine received the downgraded export version with a range of 250 kilometers. The Ukrainian Air Force has reportedly integrated the 1,300 kg cruise missile on its Soviet-era Su-24 fighter bombers.
Ukraine managed to score some hits when it first received the missile in 2023. Nevertheless, Russian air defenses and electronic warfare adapted to the missile quickly, very much rendering it ineffective within a few months.
Russia has so far intercepted dozens of Storm Shadow missiles, and in many cases it retrieved the wreckage to study them. In fact, just last month Ukraine accused Russia of developing a copy of the Storm Shadow, but no strong evidence supporting this claim has emerged yet.
