Thousands of Sudanese civilians have been reportedly killed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in el-Fashe after the withdrawal of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) from the city in western Sudan.
The battle in el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, began with the start of the power struggle in Sudan between the paramilitary force and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) more than two years and a half ago. However, the RSF’s final attack on the key city started only in April of last year. Within a month, the city was besieged by the group.
The RSF finally announced the capture of el-Fasher on October 26. The very next day, SAF chief Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan said that his forces withdrew “for military reasons” but vowed to retake the city.
Horrific videos purported to show RSF militants rounding up and executing civilians near el-Fasher began to surface online right after the fall of the city.
During a press conference in the city of Port Sudan on October 29, Mona Nour Al-Daem, Sudan’s Deputy Commissioner of Humanitarian Aid, said that at least 2,000 civilians were killed by the RSF in el-Fasher, describing what happened as “genocide against unarmed civilians.”
She said that the RSF has “executed patients and the wounded in hospitals” and hunted fleeing civilians, with many victims subjected to sexual violence.
Meanwhile, volunteer group the Sudan Doctors Network reported nearly 1,500 civilian deaths caused by the RSF in el-Fasher over the past three days, bringing the total death toll in the city since the RSF siege began in May of last year to over 14,000.
On the very same day, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), revealed that 460 patients and companions were killed at Saudi Maternity Hospital in el-Fasher.
“WHO is appalled and deeply shocked by reports of the tragic killing of more than 460 patients and companions at Saudi Maternity Hospital in El-Fasher, Sudan, following recent attacks and the abduction of health workers,” Ghebreyesus said in a statement.
“All attacks on health care must stop immediately and unconditionally,” he continued, calling for a ceasefire.
“All patients, health personnel and health facilities must be protected under international humanitarian law,” he added.
The Sudan Founding Alliance, a coalition that includes the RSF, several armed factions, political parties, and civil society forces, has denied any violence against civilians in el-Fasher.
The United Nations said that more than 26,000 people fled el-Fasher in just two days, most on foot towards the city of Tawila, 70 kilometers to the west. Approximately 177,000 civilians remain trapped in el-Fasher, according to the UN’s migration agency.
The massacre in el-Fasher marks one of the bloodiest episodes of the power struggle between the RSF and the SAF. With no real international efforts to end the war, fighting could go on for years to come. Neither side appears to be close to victory, despite the growing involvement of key regional players like the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.
