In the afternoon of July 12, a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) exploded right next to the headquarters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) special forces in the town of al-Tayyana in southeastern Deir Ezzor.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack within a few hours and identified the suicide attacker as “Abu Qasim al-Tamimi.”
The terrorist group’s main news agency, Amaq, claimed that “dozens” of SDF fighters were killed or injured in the attack. The agency also released several photos showing the explosion.
The SDF has not commented on the attack, so far. However, several local sources confirmed ISIS’ claims and revealed that the US-backed group’s special forces headquarters was located inside a villa near al-Tayyana’s gestation.
This was one of the biggest attacks on the SDF this year. ISIS cells in northwestern Syria are apparently increasing their logistic and operational capabilities.
