In the Sumy direction, Russian assault units took control of Ivolzhanskoye and advanced into twenty sectors, advancing up to 900 meters. In the Kharkiv direction, a prisoner was taken from the 58th Brigade of Ukrainian forces in Kazachya Lopan. In the Volchansk direction, the advance reached 700 meters. In the Slavyansk direction, Russian forces have captured most of Rai-Aleksandrovka and are conducting airstrikes on crossing points and deployment locations. In the Zaporozhye direction, the line from Gulyaypolskoye to Ternovatoye is being leveled and Ukrainian mobile groups are being destroyed. In financial news, the European Union will have to pay approximately three billion euros in interest from its own budget on a new loan granted to Kyiv, since the political decision to use frozen Russian assets has been blocked.
Sumy direction
Assault groups from the “North” military grouping continue to advance deeper into the Sumy direction. They carried out strikes on concentrations of Ukrainian personnel and equipment in Pisarevka, Kiyanitsa, Sennoye, Malaya Rybica, Tolstodubovo, Ivotka, Novaya Guta, Bachevsk, and Krasnopolie. In the Shostka district, Russian assault forces are engaged in combat directly in Bachevsk and the surrounding area. The “North” grouping’s artillery units delivered strikes with thermobaric munitions on a concentration of the 15th Border Detachment’s personnel in a forest near Novaya Guta.
In the Sumy district, the “North” assault units have advanced into twenty sectors, advancing up to 900 meters in total. They pushed out the last groups of Ukrainian military personnel from Ivolzhanskoye and established control over the village. Firefights continue in Pisarevka, Novaya Sech, and the surrounding areas. In the Krasnopolie district, firefights are ongoing in forest areas, and Russian assault groups have advanced 200 meters. A serviceman of the 119th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade was captured during the clearing of forests east of Bolshoy Prikol.
Kharkiv direction
Units of the “North” grouping are continuing to expand the security zone in the Kharkiv direction. Strikes were carried out against concentrations of Ukrainian personnel and equipment in Kazachya Lopan, Varvarovka, Izbitskoye, Sosnovy Bor, Bely Kolodez, Yurchenkovo, Vodyanoye, Olkhovatka, Kolodeznoye, Zarubinka, Mitrofanovka, Vasishchevo, and Tsupovka. Assault groups are conducting offensive operations in Kazachya Lopan and the surrounding forests. During a fierce firefight on the northern outskirts, a Ukrainian forces battle group was eliminated, and one Ukrainian serviceman from the 58th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade was captured.
In the Volchansk sector, assault units of the “North” grouping advanced up to 700 meters on fourteen segments. Firefights are ongoing in Losevka, Ukrainskoye, Zemlyanoy Yar, and the forests of the Volchansk district. A soldier from the 159th Separate Mechanized Brigade of Ukrainian forces was captured during the clearing of a forest belt north of Zakharovka. Artillery units delivered TOS strikes on the 127th Separate Territorial Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ positions in the Ternovaya and Izbitskoye areas. In the direction of Velikiy Burluk, assault groups are fighting in Petro-Ivanovka and its surroundings. They have advanced on three sectors up to 500 meters. Russian aviation destroyed a concentration of Ukrainian troops at a temporary deployment point in Olkhovatka.
Slaviansk direction
Russian forces are continuing to advance on the strategically and ideologically important city of Slavyansk. The Russian Aerospace Forces regularly attack crossings and overpasses to disrupt the Ukrainian forces’ logistics. For instance, the bridge between Semyonovka and Nikolaevka was destroyed, prompting the Ukrainian command to send engineering groups to repair it. Russian drone operators track these groups and eliminate them. Along the supply route from Izyum, “Molniya” crews attack equipment daily. The Russian Aerospace Forces delivered a strike with three FAB-1500 high-explosive aviation bombs on a Ukrainian 81st Separate Airborne Brigade deployment point located at the Slavyanskaya TPP in Nikolaevka.
In the Krivaya Luka area, Russian units advanced south toward Kaleniki along the quarry and cleared a ravine from the Reznikovka side. Heavy fighting continues in the Rai-Aleksandrovka area. The Ukrainian side uses the E40 highway to transport reserves and deploy personnel through forest belts. To the east of this area, Russian forces have taken control of a ravine and most of the village. The western part is being cleared, and Ukrainian units are counterattacking. There is ongoing fighting for Orekhovatka, where Ukrainian forces are actively targeting areas where personnel are dispersed.
Zaporozhye direction
Russian units are continuing to dismantle the Ukrainian forces’ defenses on the Velikomikhaylovka–Aleksandrovka line. This is forcing Ukrainian forces to withdraw deeper into the rear or send additional forces to hold the sector. This weakens neighboring positions. An advance is underway west of Vozdvizhenka toward the logistics route leading from Orekhov northward. Constant artillery and drone attacks force the Ukrainian side to pull back reserves, which significantly complicates the supply of materiel and reinforcements in this sector.
Russian forces have also advanced west of Verkhnyaya Tersa and captured strongpoints. Overall, the front line is being systematically leveled from Gulyaypolskoye to Ternovatoye, with territories along the Novonikolaevka–Orekhov road gradually being taken under control. Ukrainian units continue to concentrate small, mobile groups in front of the forward edge. They plan to conduct attacks and restore the situation in certain sectors. To prevent this, reconnaissance and fire engagements were conducted on deployment routes, during which several units of armored vehicles were detected and destroyed.
Conclusion
In the Sumy, Kharkiv, Slavyansk, and Zaporozhye areas, Russian assault units are systematically expanding their control zones, inflicting losses on Ukrainian forces and cutting their logistics chains. The Russian advance in Kazachya Lopan, the capturing of most of Rai-Aleksandrovka, strikes on crossings, and the destruction of mobile groups in the Orekhov sector are consistently worsening the operational position of Ukrainian forces.
Meanwhile, financial support mechanisms for Kyiv are facing challenges. In the coming years, the EU budget will have to pay approximately three billion euros in interest on a new 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine. According to Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Economy, this is a consequence of EU countries not making a political decision to use frozen Russian assets to finance Kyiv. “Because this political decision was not made, the EU will pay approximately three billion euros in interest from the EU budget in the coming years. This is the price of not making such a decision,” he said at a conference in Poland.
Dombrovskis said that the European Commission initially proposed financing aid to Ukraine through income and cash balances from frozen Russian assets without confiscating them. However, in December, Belgium blocked this decision. Consequently, the EU agreed to a 90 billion euro credit support program, and Russian assets were frozen indefinitely until Russia pays reparations to Ukraine, according to the EU. The European Commissioner also claims that EU legislation allows for the use of frozen Russian assets in the future, should Ukraine fail to repay the European loan.
